hi all, wonder if anyone can help me.

i have an x-reg scenic that has suddenly started giving off sort of vacuum type noises when brake pedal pressed, it is quite squeaky too; i took it to the garage who checked it over and said nothing was amiss although it wasnt as noisy 1st thing in the morning. braking seems to be exactly the same but the noise is a bit disconcerting. anyone any ideas??

thanks in anticipation

Does it feel spongey when you press the pedal? Sounds like you need to check the brake fluid level and do a brake bleed.

TW

Sounds like the Brake servo has a leak.

That uses a vacuum to apply more pressure to the brakes than you can with your foot power alone.

There is a hose going to it, pop the bonnet, run the engine, turn it off then have a listen under the bonnet.

With the engine off, pump the brake pedal tills it goes hard, keep your foot on the pedal, start the engine and the pedal should slowly depress, if this happens as described, chances are your servo is ok.

So it could be something else. If the servo is okay, that is.

It could just be in need of a bleed.

Or something.

You're right, the pedal would be spongy but you wouldn't hear any strange noises.

I reckon it's just good old air in the system.

Shimmers, do you know how to bleed your brakes (safely) ?

I know full well you lot will take the p1ss but the same thing happened to me several years ago. Every time I pressed the brake I got a "pphht" sound. The brakes worked fine, I bled them, changed the fluid, checked the servo and all the little hydraulicky bits. For 2 weeks whilst I was on leave I chased the fcuking leak and found nothing.Eventually went back to work an lo and behold it stopped. Come the weekend it started again, Monday it stopped. Carried on like that a few weeks until the penny dropped. RAF shoes OK, civvy Doc Martens had a fcuking leak:PDT_Xtremez_42:

thanks for all the info. although i don't have any doc martins which is a shame...! quality story that one!

i will listen for noises under the bonnet as you say, i dont know how to bleed the brakes at all let alone safely!

car in need of service and will get them to bleed if necessary

Get your derrière down to the camp motor club.

You will learn loads and save money whilst you're at it.

Oil changes, filter changes, brake bleeding etc are all quite easy when you've done it once or twice.

Just poke your head round the door and you'll find someone who will help.

I wish I had those facilities today.

I had what sounds like a similar thing recently on my Astra, turned out it was the vacuum pump. If it's that that's buggered on yours, get it replaced soonest. Found that out to my cost when travelling down the road and the brakes failed completely. That got the heart rate up a bit!

Fcuk me, an admission of fallibility from a bombhead :PDT_Xtremez_43: Are you sure you weren't wearing "pumps"?:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I remember an armourer neighbour at Coningsby telling me he had propshaft vibration on his Cortina. He was going to replace the propshaft until I suggested he check the oil in his gearbox. Hey presto vibration cured (until all the oil drained out of the knackered oil seal). His answer was that he thought the oil pi$$ing out between the gearbox extension housing and propshaft was because he had overfilled it (not):PDT_Xtremez_42:

Far from being an admission of fallibility it is more a tale of the plumbers determination to solve the seemingly unsolvable. I found the fault and fixed it unlike you ancillierires who would simply have NFF'd the fcuker and hoped it would fade away!:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Dam straight we would have NFF'd it, because were better than you bombhead mongs and we would have worn RAF shoes 7 days a week because a day out of uniform is a day wasted :PDT_Xtremez_14:
