I would like to know the view of fellow Goaters about my summer vacation that has been booked but not yet fully paid to Sri Lanka. Booked with Thomson flying with Emirates.

My problem is, is it wise to travel abroad without knowing if you are going to get back on time, due to the changing conditions with the volcanic ash cloud? Or just go with it and see what happens?

The other problem is that I am best man for my brother-in-law that is why we are going there, otherwise I would choose to holiday in the UK.

Any views?

The problem is the situation is changing all the time, I really feel for those that have holidays booked. I suppose you just have to see what happens and hope for the best! One silver lining I guess is if we do have the scorching summer we keep being promised it will boost our flagging tourist trade!!!

Sweating on a few ash-free days this week as I'm off for a short break in Vienna (not Venice). Getting back from there would be awkward but not impossible.

As long as you're flying from Weds onwards you should be enjoying the gondolas...

Rather than worry about it now, I'd go for the jolly then worry about it if and when there is a problem. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

As you say...Awkward but

PSB,

Correct, but you could be back in the UK with Three train journeys.

1. Vienna > Munich.

2. Munich > Paris GDN.

3. Paris GDN > London.

We are in a similar situation...Have a 2 week holiday booked in the Dominican Republic for the family in July.....

Still have one trip away before then and due back 2 days before we go on holiday......one delay and I'm fooked.

Oh well, fingers crossed....Crack on..............:PDT_Xtremez_09:

All travel is all about risk, that's half the fun. If you thought about all of the things that could go wrong from leaving your house until you get back you would never go anywhere. Go for it.

Noted, thanks a lot for that. Looks like we should be OK though, but I'll kep that option in mind.

My pleasure Sir.

I guess you will be ok.

Bear in mind that only Two trains per day bothways (both SNCF & Dbahn) between Munich Hbf & Paris GDN (journey time something like 6hrs)

Oh yes! What a cash cow that will be with a captive audience. I can almost see them rubbing their hands with glee knowing that we may all have to stay at home and pay well over the odds for holidays especially families with school children.

Personally I would holiday at home as I don't see why a week in a static caravan down west Wales costs more than a fortnight in a hotel in Spain. At least in Spain the weather is almost a given. Unfortunately mrs brat loves the beach, she loves lounging on a bit of dirt that gets wet twice a day, I swear she would spend everyday there if we lived closer.

I live 15 minutes from Porthcawl in the winter yet it can take hours to get there in the summer. All because it has sand, Ice cream and a second rate fairground. :PDT_Xtremez_06:

IMO, most of our 'resorts' look tired and haven't kept with the times. Allied to that, the prices are just unbelievable and they wonder why people go abroad.

Second rate, compared to what ? Barry Island ? :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Crack on..................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

As far as I know it doesn't have any sand. I think it has rocks that get wet twice a day though, doesn't that make it third rate? :PDT_Xtremez_31:

No sand on Barry Island...are you having a giraffe ?

As a kid we used to go there as soon as the sun threatened to show itself........admittedly there are no sand dunes ala porthcawl but more like a conventional beach with sand ......:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Much of Gavin and Stacy shows the island and its sandyness...

Porthcawl is certainly classier than Barry...at least some of the babies aren't smoking and all their tats are spelt correctly...We have worse over here in the form of Mablethorpe...That truly is a sh1thole full of human detritus!

Resurrecting this thread I know, but thank goodness the ash situation did not affect our break in Vienna.
And as someone said in another thread, it IS the dogs whatsits of a place to visit. Stunning city and history, well worth thinking about for a long weekend city break.
And not a gondola in sight!:PDT_Xtremez_14: Although there were some tourist cr@p stuff emblazoned with the logo 'No Kangaroos in Austria'; presumably they are more used to being confused with Oz than an Italian city!

As I left work on Friday there was grumblings about ash for next week...The wind is swinging back around to the perfect direction for a solid ash faff...
