Support for Veterans Aid.

Hello All.

In my new role as E-Goat Charity Bloke and after some discussion with Vim, I have put together a few words to describe exactly what I have let myself in for and what I would like to do with the support of all Goaters. (Be they regular posters, occasional posters, lurkers, family members, recruits and so on)

As you know E-Goat annually supports a small military charity. Once the website running costs have been met any funds that are left are donated to the E-Goat charity of the year. In the past we have helped raise money for several causes. Please take the time if you haven’t already to read about this good work HERE

The E-Goat backroom staff sampled the memberships feelings and decided to offer support once more to Veterans Aid (VA). This unprecedented second year of support is a departure from the original goal of “one year one charity, “ but this break in tradition is for good reason.

I am very honoured to have accepted the role as Charity Bloke and act as a liason person between e-Goat and our chosen charity, Veterans Aid. Those who frequent the Goat will know what a fantastic charity this is but if you don’t, please take a look at the Veterans Aid website. They are acting as a form of “First Aid” charity giving immediate and direct help to all ex-service personnel who are living on the streets on in poor conditions who really need help, care and guidance.

To do this they need support from people like us. Veterans Aid were overwhelmed by the cheque for five hundred pounds which was donated by the E-Goat membership. If £500 can make this much difference just imagine what a grand could do! Just take a look at the Thank You Letter Here

So what can we all do now? Well, you can help the Goat and Veterans Aid by donating using the green donate button. You could set up a subscription for £5 a year which frees up other Goat revenue (such as income from Google ads) to go towards VA. You could follow the outstanding lead of E-Goat Moderator RAFBird who is running the Reading Half Marathon for Veterans Aid. If you want to, you can support her and donate directly. Take a look here to find out more.

If you are a recruit at RTS or in training elsewhere and have to satisfy a course requirement for a charitable project please do suggest VA to your mentors and contact me for any assistance we can offer in the way of contacts or advice. If you are already out in the big wide RAF operational world and are considering rowing up Everest whilst in AFG then consider devoting it to VA.

There are many other ways in which people can help and I will post suggestions over the next month should folk wish to take them up. And this is where I fit in. It’s my job to act as a “go between” for E-Goat and Veterans Aid and help coordinate our efforts, making sure that the efforts of E-Goat and of individuals are properly recognised. For example, I have no problem with writing letters of support at assessment time for people who make an effort and raise money on behalf of VA. (RAFBird take note!!)

You can also PM me if you wish to discuss ideas of your own away from the Goaty eye.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Best wishes

Great post TW. Nice to have someone who will be able to specifically dedicate some time to the charity stuff we do through the goat. Thanks for linking me in for the run. Still training hard! :)

Thanks RAF Bird!!

Your efforts for running the Reading Half Marathon are even more poignant when you consider what I was told today.

I made my fourth call to the Veterans Aid team today, partly on behalf of an E-Goat member who PM'd me for more information aboiut how he could help and partly to see how they are getting on.

The outreach worker I spoke to was highly appreciative of our support in the past and grateful for our continued support in the future!!

During our conversation, he described to me an ongoing case concerning a former RAF serviceman who is on the Veterans Aid books.

"David" served for six or seven years in The Royal Air Force in the late sixties. He left and joined civvie street and began to carve out his new life post service.

He appeared to doing well and enjoyed keeping himself fit by running and remained interested in the spirit of the outdoors and adventure. A spirit which was nurtured and fostered during his time wearing his blue suit.

But thirty or so years ago, "David" made a choice. Nobody knows why he made his choice, but he did. He chose to leave the house he lived in and went to live on the streets. He wasn't forced. He wasn't, say, a drug user who was kicked from his accomodation. Neither was he an alcoholic who had fallen on hard times and wwandered away from society. In fact, he shunned alcohol.

He made a choice and was happy with his life.

"David", in keeping with his love of running and the outdoors, often joined some of the London Regiments on their physical training runs through the town. He had nothing, but himself, his character and his self respect. Sleeping rough was what he wanted. It appears that the outdoor was just the way that he wanted to live.

Admirably, over the decades, he used to give guided tours to people around the streets of London. This used to keep him ticking over and he supported himself this way rather than having to beg. Even more incredibly, he used to act as a guide in the Alps, again showing his natural expertise and love for the outdoors which had become his home.

Even so, "David" was vulnerable and he was brought to the attention of Veterans Aid. He was asked if he needed help and politely declined. Some time later, "David" turned up at the drop in centre and asked if he could have a new pair of trainers so he could keep on running. VA duly obliged and "David" went on his ways.

He knew the VA were there if he needed them and often dropped in if he needed anything before popping back out to his beloved outdoors. They even offered him accomodation but he always politely declined, before setting off on his way.

A short time ago, "David" who is now 68 years of age, was found sleeping on the banks of the Thames river.

His leg was broken. He was cold, he was hungry and he was in pain.

Veterans Aid were there to pick him up.

Well done Ex Bay!

Considering what you have been through yourself, on behalf of the Goat, we applaud you and your generosity to VA.

I take my hat off to you and wish you all the best at Christmas!!!

Thanks Stevie,

I will give the VA team a quick nudge on Tuesday and let them know that they may have a problem with their payment/transaction system.
