The ability to communicate in a relatively clear manner with a good grasp of both the written and spoken English Language is essential in any communications post:PDT_Xtremez_42:

All you have to do is ask the right questions. I know everyone there would be happy to answer whatever you want.

Anyway chilley my boy. See you on Monday, my office 08:20. Bring your hat. silly boy.

90SU is an awsome post, I got here in August fae Cosford and i'm loving it. I'm not on a field coms squadron but i'm on FGW (Force Generation Wing) which has got Eng Maint where all the kit is fixed, PSF, Ops etc. I work in Eng Maint Sat Comms an i love it. Got some great courses out of it, going on my HGV in a few weeks. Loads of time to play sport if you want it. Yes it gets VERY busy at times and I mean VERY busy!!! But the old addage comes into force, Work Hard Play Hard.

If you want you can drop me a PM an i can give you more specific info if you want

Yes, i imagine that FGW is an awesome post! If you want extra bucks at the end of your tour and to save a shed load of money, go on Field Sqn's or even ERAS if you can. If you want to wear a comfy pair of slippers and whinge every time someone in a hole calls you for a bit opf "expert advice!" on computers, then 5 is your calling! Personally, i'm enjoying the field sqn work. You tend to work hard and play hard! If you want a different perspective, PM me, or press # for the main menu!

I like it. It has its ups & downs, but I get to run around in greens and pretend I'm all hard, like. And there's plenty of travel as well. It will take over your life to a certain degree though, so maybe not great if you're attached or fond of seeing your friends, ever. Still, you can always make new ones.

The 'day-to-day' question is tricky to answer. A great deal of time is spent hands-in-pockets, waiting patiently for lunchtime. And then the next week you can find yourself on a night-shift, or working into the evening, driving off to recce for an exercise, being sent home because there's nowt to do, on a course etc. Also, you have to try and get stuck in; it's very easy to mince about in the wings (no pun intended) and do sweet FA.

Yeah I hear it gets VERY busy, My mate works in Eng Maint and he is/was a shirker when we worked together for years until last summer, so I can't imagine him doing too much.

Or, for the more pro-active amongst us, go down the gym or participate in a weekly 2 hour boot march to really destroy your souls/knees/ankles etc. Personally, i prefer to fill my time with an activity. Stealth bumming is also a good crack! Excuse the really loose pun!

This thread should be closed now. I had a chat with the lad and he knows whats the deal is. If he needs any more help he knows where my office is.

Whats the best route into TCW, I'm going into my basic soon but this is what I aspire to be as opposed to the all too familiar help desk role. Also, is this the place to be if you want to go abroad as much as possible?

If you follow the A1 northbound, spot a sign for RAF Leeming, go to the guard room and ask for the location of said place, they'd probably help.

Or do you mean, "I want to be posted to TCW. How do I go about it?" The answer, my soon to be educated friend, is when you get your (ahem) "dream sheet", put down TCW or 90SU. It's pretty much Wheel of Fortune/Misfortune as to what place you get given! What you want to worry about for the next 12 months(?) is getting through training. You seem to have your career aspirations sorted. Just get your heads in the books and reap the benefits of working hard!

Wow, pedantic and informative in one post!

HaHa, right you are.

Yeah I have heard of the Dreamsheet but it would appear that it serves no purpose except to remove a bit more foliage from our forests... Looks like I'll just stick to the hard work angle and keep my shoes shiny :P

Any words of wisdom from those in the trade (willfully or otherwise)

Kind Regards,
Simon :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Yea....when you get to Cosford, never EVER under any circumstances **** off WO ********. That man is GOD!!!! A legend within his own rights but he can shout and he can also make your life a living hell if he needs to!!!

In all seriousness, if you want to be on loads of courses/exercises/detachments/etc then by all means come and join us at Morale HQ! You probably won't have a say when you leave trg anyway. There tends to be a lot of the ab initio types leaving Tossford and descending upon the pearly gates of the north!

If you look on the bright side, when you get high pay band, you'll be saving a fortune. Wouldn't get out of bed for what they pay you lot though!! Ha ha!:PDT_Xtremez_34:

A thousand strong

A thousand strong

Well there you go. only half a dozen replies to the one question, each one almost berating the next. 90 SU is in effect what the whole of TG3 and 11 were made up of, people doing very different things and slagging one another off in the process. Rivalry will always follow anyones line of work as will bleating about being jiffed for jobs, dets, boot runs and the like. This is the RAF's comms, end of, wherever you find yourself depends on wherever the hoy polloy put you, each area is manned by like minded people who spend whole periods slagging off the others, but then Ground Radio get slagged by IT who slag off TG3 harmony posts who slag off 1ACC who slag 90SU/ TCW who slag themselves and on!! welcome to TG4, infact welcome the RAF.....But it works!
