Not sure where to post this so figured i put it here.

What are the rules to taking a salute?

Does it have to be an officer or can an airman take a salute at a local parade?

Cheers

Jamie

You salute the rank and not the man/woman, so if that man/woman holds the queens commission you salute him/her, if they don't then you don't salute them.

Clearly there are a few exceptions to this; foreign service officers are still saluted, we salute the fallen regardless of rank, RAF/RN/Army Colours and Standards and funeral processions. There are more in AP818, Pt 2, Chap 1.

Obviously if someone salutes you and you are not commissioned then the polite thing would be to return the salute. But when you say taking the salute? I think the wise thing would be to inform the individual(s) that they are not required to salute you.

I may be wrong and their maybe something I have missed, but I can't anything that says a none commissioned rank is saluted.

I assume when you say "Taking a salute" you mean as in when we have dignitaries on the parade ground who are in their enclosure whoo are saluted on the march past.

If that's the case, then I don't know to be honest.

I would expect it would be down to their position e.g. The queen, you salute. Dave from Tesco's shelf stacking department, I wouldn't think so, maybe an 'Eye's right' (or left) as a form of acknowledgement that they are the V.I.P.

Best thing is either wait here until you get an answer, but best thing would be to pop in and see your friendly SWO ( or call him if you don't want picking up on your sideburns)

I presume we are talking about someone stood on the dais in the High Street next to the Mayor/Chairman of the Parish Council/Dave from Tesco's as the massed ranks of space cadets, scouts and brownies troop past.
IMHO it should be the senior commissioned rank present and s/he should outrank the bod marching the troops past, ordering the 'eyes right'.
If the only military bod handy is an NCO, s/he would not respond to a salute other than to stand smartly to attention, so leave the response to the eyes right to the senior civilian dignitary (the aforementioned Mayor/Chairman of the Parish Council/Dave from Tesco's) who should doff cap, bow head, give big thumbs up, whatever the local custom might be.
Better still, get the local Legion/RAFA branch to get one of their senior blokes in beret and blazer to throw one up as you glide past in full sail.
