I have an LAC who is on the emergency tax code ‘BR’
He was told at Halton that his tax code would be sorted, but this has not been done.
The HR staff here at Brize has told him any tax questions need to go directly to the tax office, they can not help…

After talking to the tax office, he has been informed that his code can not be changed until next April as he has missed the window for this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this right??

Any advice will be gratefully received…
Thanks in advance
P

I informed the Tax Office on Monday last week of a change to my pay.

They said they would issue a new Tax Code to take effect from 01 Apr 08 as it was too late for the old FY.

Guess that what they must of told your LAC too, maybe he misunderstood?

Not an expert on Tax by any means but had a long spell in pay a few years ago so know a little. The code BR means base rate; I'm not sure what that rate is at the moment but around 22% and I believe that he'll be paying over the odds on his tax as all his pay will be taxed at 22% rather than the first few grand untouched by the tax man and the next 1500 ish being at 10%. Ask him to compare with another LAC to be sure. Brize PSF are correct however and it is a matter between the guy & the tax office but I think that it's b0llocks that it can't be sorted before next year (09 that is, will be too late for 07/08 tax year), we were always changing tax codes and I can't think that JPA has changed that. PSF should at least be abe to give the guy a contact number to speak to the HMF part of the tax office to get it sorted quicker; they should also advise him on his tax reference number if he can't find it on his pay statement.
