I'm a phase 2 trainee at Cosford just now. I've got to give a presentation that, 'details the role of TCW and 1ACC during the Falklands conflict'.

http://www.raf.mod.uk/raf90signals/history/tcwhistory19701999.cfm

I found that information above, however can anyone point me in the direction of where I'd be able to find more information about the respective unit's roles during the conflict?

Are there any books that have more in depth information?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try PM'ing Mad Collie, he was a TCO back in those days on TCW, he'd prolly be able to help!

Downsizer, if your nose suddenly bleeds when I next see you, you've only got yourself to blame ;-)

OP - if you are on FB, ask in this group www.facebook.com/groups/exwinglads/ a few of them where in the FI at the time. I think there are a few photos as well.

As for 1ACC, I thought they only made it as far as Ascension. Mainjafad will probably have a more detailed account.

Elements were deployed early doors in Op CORPORATE to help provide air C2 once the force went ashore. The former Type 99 radar was found in Stanley and wen on to form part of the Mobile Radar Reserve that ended up as a flight of TCW before the reformation of 1ACC in 1994/5.

The S259 did deploy to Asi but I don't think it went any further. Look at www.rafweb.org/1ACC.htm for a bit more info, otherwise pm me and I will try and put you in touch with someone who may have access to the F540s at 1ACC

I went down there with Wing attached the 259. I thought it did end up going South_. I know we ended up taking two radars from the town onto the Stanley airfield. TPS 43 was one I recall. Agree there were other elements of the Wing ahead of us.

Yep, the TPS-43 (UK Type 99) was "liberated" from the Argentinians and returned to the UK. This was the reformed 1ACC's first (and some say only) real mobile radar. It was retired from service after the introduction of the Type 101 (I did some of the ops acceptance trials for this) around 1998/9 iirc. The T99 was an excellent radar but became unsupportable through the manufacturer as we hadn't actually paid for it!

Deployed the radar to several interesting places, mainly on the West coast of Scotland in support of Joint Maritime Courses - have left a large number of brain cells at the Albea Hotel!

Oh God Dam it - that brings back memories "The Albea Hotel" no wait a minute cant remember a dam thing after about an hour of entering the place. Ah now I remember - Horizontal Rain, driving wind, and a complete set of crappers that not one of them flushed..........interesting Dets those, especially driving all the way up there with a 4Ton Bedford and Tasker in Tow.
