I am finally going off to do my TMT nearly 2 years after getting promoted (is this a record??) and wondered if anyone has any 'Top Tips' or better still can they shed some light on what exactly I'm likely to be doing whilst I'm there?

Same goes for JMLC, though I still don't have a date for that yet :PDT_Xtremez_31:

My TMT seemed little more than I had been doing for the 2 years previous, it's all, as the name suggests, trade management. Obviously, each trade will have it's own path and I can only speak from a TG3 perspective.

JMLC is slightly different, the least you will get out of it is a greater appreciation of yourself as a leader and a person, the most, a rude awakening into the realms of leadership it all depends where you are comming from.

I suppose, for both courses, it all depends on how pro-active you have been in searching out opportunities to lead and manage in your current trade and as a Cpl of two years, I would think you'd have plenty of experience.

Either way, go with an open mind and a view to learn and you'll enjoy it.

Thanks for your advice TMG, I'll bear it in mind. As for searching out opportunities to lead and manage, everyone I work with is SO1 rank and above, which means I now have 2 years worth of top leadership experience :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Must say you've got a great sense of humour:PDT_Xtremez_14:

If it's not changed since my last vist to Sec TS (bar JPA) TMT should be pretty much a doddle. The majority of it you would most likely encountered in your 2 years (morale, welfare etc) and the only nause I would say over the 2 weeks is the presentation at the end. It's only 5 mins and for me it was a registry move so powerpoint and a working knowledge of JSP 440 is all you should need. Hopefully you'll have a good bunch on TMT with you and now you get the joys of Portsmouth rather than Chigagos !!!

JMLC on the other hand needs a little more from you. That said as long as you go in with a positive attitude you will have no worries. I've heard on the grapevine that they have toughened up due to too many people treating it as just an attendence course.

So enjoy and good luck.

Having done mine last year just before they stopped the cse for THAT SYSTEM we must not name. You should enjoy it (especially if you get a good bunch on the cse). As the rest said most of it you should have encountered in some form with 2 years in rank (even if it is working out how to keep the boss happy). You will have to do a welfare interview which is filmed (thankfully it's not assessed) and should be a giggle after the event (believe me mine was!), the presentation is now 10 mins (unlike JMLC which has a 5 min one) and hopefully should be job related. In the last year or so they have also included a section on assessment writing including writing a draft F6000 and a visit to the excitement which is PMA (whether this is still the case what with the move to Southwick Park of SecTS and the immenient move of PMA to Wycombe I don't know).

Go there, listen, learn a bit and drink lots and lots of coffee. Are you one of these 6 weekers by the way? If so, I don't envy you one little bit (TMT2 was a laugh mind but could have been crammed into half the time if there were less T breaks etc).

Good luck anyway fella. Just get your head down and learn as much as you can and get out in the evenings for a beer to relax.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

JMLC is an excellent course. Keep smiling and enthusiastic, you'll learn loads.

Thanks again for the advice.

TBH after 2 years it will just be a relief to finally get the monkey off my back so to speak. I like the idea of a visit to PMA so hopefully they haven't sh1tcanned that bit of the course and the welfare interview brings back memories of a story of an old SNCO of mine who was almost binned off his course for the stuff he came out with!

Wobbly - two week course mate, but will do my best to sup the T bar dry of coffee and the NAAFI of booze :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Looks like I won't be doing JMLC till the New Year though :PDT_Xtremez_21:

Woolymouse, were you on the course last August?

I thought TMT was relevant, the presentation was a bit dodgy, but practice it as much as you can.

Best advice I got for JMLC was to keep smiling and play the game. Hope this helps

I thought TMT was a complete waste of time. Much had already been covered on JMLC, or you had experience of it in your work place. If you get a good bunch on your course then it will not be that bad.

JMLC - brilliant course.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Yes Just act like a middle ranking modern politician (a yes Man) on the way up and toe the line and you should be OK. Nothing wrong with that I may Add

I did mine 17 Years ago and have been on squadrons bays etc since then and am "probably the oldest chief in the airforce" aged 48 and have used my common sense 95% and tmt 5 % of the time although tmt is mostly common sense albeit someone elses.

The big problem I have is "what now is the fcuking point" the air force I joined has died (helped along by the Treasury) and I for one are only in it for the money now rather than DEFENDING the great british ideal that we all liked to stand for once in a while.

Afganistan/Iraq/Lebanon/etc etc had problems in the 1980's 1990's when I served but did we give a fcuk then

NOOOOOOOO is the answer Big Difference now is BUSHY and his rich mates

Good point, I did TMT way back in about 85, i could be wrong though, no powerpoint but 2 weeks at Hereford. No idea what JMLC or whatever letters your using is all about. However leadership is all about being respected by all, your peers and your leaders,

I may be wrong, but I was at SecTS t'other week and was chatting to a friend who was on her TMT and I'm almost certain she said it was now assessed. It is by far the highlight of the course and it is funny as fcuk when you watch them back with the rest of the course.

I felt that it was a course that left a lot to be desired in terms of content. There are without a doubt several very useful aspects, the most useful being the way it makes you think about how you will manage/lead your staff. Will you be autocratic/democratic, will you delegate work/will you hoard work, how will you interact with your staff ie rank or name. However there is so much that is irrelevant.

It gives you food for though, BUT, it's all pretty much covered on JMLC so yet again it seems SecTS are desperatley clinging onto the last threads of their so called jobs by running this course in its present form.

Oh and take away the late starts/early finishes/30 min tea breaks/hour and half lunches and you have only a weeks course. As someone said on a previous thread, its a One Week course crammed into Two Weeks.

TMT is more like a 3 day course crammed into 2 weeks! As already said, most is covered by JMLC, but it is supposed to be a good chance to network, but as I had an ex-couple on my course, it was split into 3 groups. One of her mates, one of his mates and the rest of us who didn't give a monkeys either way!

JMLC is a much better course where attitude counts for a lot of the marks. Go there intending to do eff all and you will be binned. I had a great time but got a right bollocking for not having medium weights. (Spent two years previous in greens and didn't even know they existed!) Most of it is very grown up and as long as you are willing to add to the discussion and listen to others, you should sail through.

Only bit of advice is to make sure that all your kit is up to scratch and that your shoes/boots are broken in otherwise it will be very painful! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

I know the welfare interview was assessed on TMT2 went I did my TMT1 but they are always fiddling with the course so it may just have changed in 15 mths.
