I have just had my filter interview with the AFCO who said she would recommend me for OASC! Hopefully this is at least 85% certainty that this may now go ahead!!!

However I would like your opinion on my age! I am going for Administrative Officer and will obviously have to go through basic training if I get in. Does anyone know anyone or trained with anyone the same age as me......35.

I am confident I should pass the OASC physicals at the moment I can achieve the following and am still improving. My BMI is borderline (30) but am confident this will reduce before this time (now on strict calorie count as well as training) and improve all scores below.

Press ups - 40
sit ups - 49
1 mile - 6.54 mins
3k - 14.41 mins
5k - 25.33 mins
2k row (concept 2) - 7.27.00 mins
(bleep unknown but scored 13.3 10 years ago!!! should get to approx 11-12 now, did a marathon in 06 however this kind of training is no good for VO2 max i dont think?)

All this considered, will basic training be beyond me at my age, I remain confident but would still love some feedback if you have any? (sleep depravation no prob as my son is still only 2!)

What kind of runs do you do on Basic and how often.

All feedback and advice wil be greatly appreciated.....

Your age should be of concern, going by the figures and times that you have submitted then the physical aspect you should be fine, although the Wg Cdr Medical boarding officer may pick up on your BMI, a warning to lose a bit more weight will come your way!

I attend OASC the week before last, we started off with about 20 people on the the Tuesday evening and finshed the selection process with only 5, myself included.

I am 34, currently a serving SNCO. I have also gone for Admin Sec, aswell as Provost Security as a second choice. I am now waiting for my letter, which will inform me of Cranwell's descision, fingers crossed it will go my way. If not then I shall go back in 12 months and try again.

If you need any further information on what to expect you can send me a PM, I would be more than happy to help.

Good Luck!!!!

RAF Career web site states 36 as upper cut off age as long as your accepted before then shouldn't be a problem.
Talking to ex ranker mate on OASC at the moment most of the drop outs on his course are from Phy injuries or failure to meet standard, although you look like you've kept up a good level of fitness.
I know they do a variety of phys including log run work and other general circuit beastings.

Good luck :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I recently went to OASC and there were quite a few people over 30 who got through to the final stage, so I'm sure you will be fine. There were 7 currently serving members of the forces on my OASC intake, so I'm sure you won't be the only person over 30 at IOT.

Thanks Cashew! sounds positive, bit disturbed only 5 finished the 4 days however was this due to idiots or pure difficulty!? oh yeah and I think I read it as no concern but thanks for reposting!! thanks...keep em coming....off to the gym tonight to beast myself again!!!!!

Thanks Martin, when you say drop outs, do you mean mostly because of the phys tests, ie dont make the standards and cut short right away? I didnt know they sent you home early.....!!! I spose if they aptitude tests dont go well they can be kicked of early too?........cheers Martin....z

On OASC you can expect the numbers to drop twice.

The first time will be on the first day after the apptitude testing phase. The men and women who do not reach the required score for the branch selection will go no further and will leave. You will find that this mainly consist's of the people going for aircrew or pilots.

After that you go on to the group discussion, group plan and then followed up with the hanger phase the next day and the individual plan. After lunch you have the wait to find out who will be going on to interviews and medicals. The standard is high, so anyone who hasn't met the standard will be given an indivdual review and told where they went wrong or advised on their weaker aspects. After that they will leave and take no further part.

Hope this helps, just give it your all. I think it comes down to how badly you wan't it! Again good luck!

Sorry blonde moment
he's completed OASC he's on next phase, the drop outs are either unable to reach required standards or injured, I think they get a chance to recuperate and or reach standard before either back coursing or rejection.

OASC, I remember did it 9 years ago as the old man at 30

Day 1 CLAN tests etc etc & medical, I left early cause I wasn't allowed to be a Loady with medical recorded Hayfever. (With todays OOA turnround I'm glad I didn't now, every 20 months is bad enough)

But before I left got told if I'd have applied 10 years earlier I'd have passed pilot level for testing then rejected offers of Admin, Supply, Provost Commision didn't want to be an office paper shuffler but to carry on getting my hands dirty.

Now I'm stuck in a fekking office, oh the joys of promotion!

I spent quite a while at Cranhell, saw a lot of people in their mid 30s go through the system. You won't be alone by any stretch.

Too Old at 36

Hope I'm not the first to break this to you, but with your max career length of about 19 years, there is no chance that you will make Chief of the Air Staff. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Hey that's quite right!!! Can you not do longer......Well not sure that job is for me but company line must remain and it goes like this......'I will remain ambitious and do my job to the best of my ability, excelling those areas that need my utmost attention. I see no reason why not, in 19 years, I cannot steal Sir Jock Stirrup's job after I have poached Glenns......' Seriously though can you not work any longer than 19 years? 1st big target, flight lieutenant, Squadron leader, Wing commander, group captain, air commodore, air vice marshall, chief air marshall, marshall of the RAF!!!!!!! :PDT_Xtremez_31:

IOT you mean?

New standards:
if you fail an element you are back coursed or go to delta if it's Ex DE
if you fail an IOTFA (fitness) you go to RAD flt until you can pass it
if your injured you go to RAD flt until you're rehabbed or med discharged
if you come off for admin/personal reasons etc you go to RAD flt until it's sorted or you PVW/PVR/get your marching orders
