Anybody got one of these wonders of Japanese automotive technology?

If so you could perhaps explain why if the throttle sticks full on and the brakes fail you can't put the gearbox in neutral or turn off the engine or use the hand brake.

I had thought the same but then again if you bought a Toyota you deserve all you get.

Crack on..................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Now you know why "The car in front is a Toyota":PDT_Xtremez_30:

In all seriousness though, some of these new fangled motors have key card ignition that allegedly can't be turned off while the vehicle is in motion and similar electronic hand brakes. Couple this with dumb americans who possibly burned out their brakes and didn't have the gumption to find neutral (if again that is selectable when the vehicle is in motion bearing in mind they drive a lot of slushbox cars).

I own a 3rd gen Prius and have experienced no problems with it all. It has an automatic gearbox it has a constant variable transmission. The 'gear stick' is more like a computer joystick and is electrically linked to the gear box. You have the choice of Drive, Reverse, Park, a Regenerative Braking gear (for going down long hills for enhanced battery charging) and of course Neutral. The software prevents you from making incorrect selections such as Park or reverse while moving forwards etc. Never tried to switch the engine off while moving because it's probably not all that clever to do in any car. If however, you stop the engine while in gear it automatically puts the car into Park. The handbrake is a mechanical footbrake type often seen in American cars.

I think all the above comments are an indication of the problems of losing the physical link to any controls in a car and only having one system installed in any case. I assume that the use of electronics lessens the weight of metal to be moved thereby increasing MPG somewhat. (...and there was me thinking they done something clever to the engine?)

The Times showed the best description of the actual problem yesterday (too stupid to link it to here though!)

Aircraft fly-by-wire systems have several levels of redundancy in case of problems - but what car has two accelerator pedals?

By the way, I only found out one of my cars was a electonic throttle late last year (shows how much work I do on it!) And I have had an issue with carpet movement under the Pedals - and its not a Toyota.

Is that the right link ?

The head of Toymota UK was on BBC Breakfast yesterday being interviewed about the problems with the Prius. He was trying to explain that the 'problem' that some owners in the states have experienced was simply due to the aggresiveness of the ABS software, i.e. it cuts in when perhaps its not needed over pot-holed, uneven roads or on ice. There is no fault with the brakes, the ABS just needs tweaking to accomodate, effectively, the needs of drivers who depend on it too much.
Unfortunately the BBC presenter (Bill Turnbull I think) was trying too hard to play the part of the hard-nosed interviewer and either totally misunderstood what he was being told or deliberately distorted it to conclude that Prius drivers can't have any confidence that their car's brakes will work when they go over a speed bump! This sort of interviewing, especially by someone who clearly hadn't a clue what he was actually talking about and was simply hell-bent on sh1t-stirring doesn't help anyone, least of all Prius owners who don't really know how their ABS sysem works or what its for anyway.

Off Topic A couple of winters back I had someone telling me that they knew the roads had been gritted because they could 'feel the brake pedal moving rapidly up and down accompanied by a Brrr-Brrr-Brrr sound as the wheels skidded on the ungritted parts of the road'. "It's your ABS working at saving your @rse and also telling you that you've got a bit too much lead in your boots for the conditions" but I knew I was talking to a lost cause.

Tashy,
Cheers mate - its the right story, but its apparent the graphics aren't shown on-line!?

Off Topic I've never owned or even driven a Toyota but have the greatest respect for their pickups following the Clarkson episode where they literally tried to destroy one and found they couldn't! Even being submerged by the incoming tide and being dragged back out couldn't kill the thing!

That's the problem, there's just no stopping them. :PDT_Xtremez_14:
