Hi all!
I was after some advice about transferring to the RAF from the Army.
I am currently a SNCO in the Army and have been serving for 16 years, I am interested in a couple of roles within the RAF and also would like to try and commission into these roles.
Having looked at the roles online and the minimum educational standards I don't meet them, but I know of other jobs/careers etc that will take life long learning into account. Also does the RAF offer a late entry commission like the army?
the roles I'm interested in are Air Traffic Control (as officer or SNCO) or Air Operations Officer.

any advice or a point in the right direction on where to get advice would be greatly appreciated!

:)

If you don't meet the minimum educational standards for a trade/branch, then you will not be eligible, simple as. To be considered for ATC or Flt Ops, you will need to be educationally qualified. We have an LE-type of commission - the Commissioned WO (CWO) scheme - however you would need to be a serving RAF WO to be considered and only then if the branches are open. A lot of potential transferees from the other services believe that just because they are SNCOs/WOs in the Army/RN then they will automatically be eligible for commissioning into the RAF. That is simply not the case. To turn things the other way, if a RAF SNCO/WO wanted to commission into the Army, he/she would have to reach the minimum educational standards - no differentation is made by the Army, so neither do we. The only way to be considered is to get the qualifications required.

That aside, when you do become qualified, your first port of call is your nearest RAF AFCO. After then, you will need to contact the RAF Careers Hotline (the 0845 number on the website). At the same time, you will need to sound out your RCMO to initiate the transfer process from your side. Be warned, RCMOs are notoriously difficult in letting their people transfer and you will certainly not be at the top of his in tray. It's not impossible - just difficult. Provided you jump through the relevant hoops (OASC selection, etc) HQ Air will initiate everything from this side. It's a long and laborious process but worth it in the end. But, as I said earlier, you need to nail down the educational qualifications first. The RAF Careers Hotline, if you ask them, will give you the number of the ATC Specialist Recruiter at Cranwell so you can chat to them and get all of the info you need.

Good luck.
