I am a Royal signals telecommunication technician sgt in the British army and have served for 19 yrs. I would like to know if there is any way i can transfer to RAF and what should i expect on training, trades courses and any other matters during this process? I am 37 and have done my sgt course and class one course. Your suggestions will be much appreciated.

I ve been out a couple of years now, but we do have a few army lads who have asked the same question here.

I think the normal route is speaking to your clerks or OC admin, maybe even the AFCO ( CIO ), from personal experiance the only one I know was my old boss who left the REME as a SSGT for ENG officer. I think he picked up his degree at Arborfield.

As to what would happen when you came over I don't know, I do know a few LCPL's who came over and went direct to Phase 2 as LAC (everyone else is AC) rather than start at Phase 1.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I have been out of the loop for a while.

At a certain Phase 1 training unit, we wrecently had a WO2 transfer.

AFAIK, he came in as an AC, did the initail part of Phase 1, and was 'up flighted' when he got to Force Protection Trg, and graduated as a Sgt.

Pm me if you need any more info.

Likewise, I had a 39yr old Staff Sgt from the Royal Signals on one of my intakes.

He was an AC during training, graduated as a Sgt. He had more medals on his chest than the DI's put together!

Certainly gave the Reviewing Officer something to talk about on parade!

As MBH said, if you need any further gen, drop me a PM.

Hello mate the previous posts are correct. I am a recruiter at the moment and once you have decided that it is what you want to do then you need to get permission from your CO. Once you have that then go down to your local AFCO and start the process (taking you letter of permission with you) then wait 10 years for your admin guys in Glasgow to sort their sh*te out and send us your paperwork. If you go for the same trade as you are now then you should have no dramas at all. You will have snags if you change trades as phase 2 training comes into play.

Hope this helps your transition from the dark side lol

thanks for your info guys and I will look into it. I didn't realise I would have to revert back to AC/private and go through training again. I have been told I would have to do a 9-10 week course, what would this consist of? Also would I drop in pay if thats the case or would my pay stay the same?

The 9 week course is the RAF basic training. Like MBH said though, if you keep your head down and play the game, the DI's will do everything to get you upflighted and out of Halton the quickest way possible. Normally by breezing straight through the "green" side of training.

Pay wise, I don't know much about this, you'd would have to enquire with your HR as I believe each case is sold by its merits.

One other word of warning though, the RAF is not recruiting many this year (funny enough) so the longer you wait, the shorter your chance may get.

Good luck.

You would be so much better off in the Army. You'll be a WO in 6 months time. Chill.
