Daft statement, but there's never been a big secret about U-2/TR-1 ops out of Akrotiri... I recall various articles in magazines such as Air Forces Monthly in the 80s and think the US Air power in Europe special by AFM mentioned U-2 det at Akrotiri!!

Think it was mentioned in the whopping great 80s publication by Salamander called The US War Machine.

I still wish the 501st CSW at Alconbury would re activate the runway like back 15 years ago, as I remember driving past there and seeing the U-2s of the then 10th TRW

TR-1s (as the new build U-2s at the time were designated) at Alconbury were from the 17th TRW. 10th TRW were a RF-4C Phantom unit, until they reroled to the CAS mission with A-10s and were renamed the 10th TFW.

What was the TR-4 ?
I remember a lecture advertised by a pilot and my Boss told me something of it, like an IAS of 450kts at 70 000 ft?

But the Dragon Lady is a beautiful craft.

That maybe the case, but this TR1A later converted to a U2 was assigned to the 10th TRW.

Oh so you found a photo of a U2 on airliners.net which is captioned WRONG!!!!! and think you know it all. Well have just dug out a number of sources dating from the time of the photo in question (1987). U2/TR1 operators at the time 9th SRW (along with the SR-71) and 17th RW's 95th RS (Assigned to USAFE, but actually a SAC unit) based at Alconbury. 10th TRW operated RF-4C Tooms and never operated the U2/TR-1. Just check any of the U-2 web sites kicking about like this one here, and you will not find the 10th mentioned, and the reason of this omission is because they never operated TR-1s or U-2's period!!!

TRSS, you would do well not to challenge MAINJAFAD, on ANY military matter, you WILL come off second best. MAINJAFAD is the goats's expert on this and I look forward to seeing him on Mastermind one day (wearing an Egoat T shirt of course).

Manjifad, I bow to your military knowledge and agree that I was wrong. I assumed that the whole of RAF Alconbury came under the 10th TRW. Hey ho they still looked good flying around though.
