I hope im posting this in the right place!! I have rescently passed my AST and the jobs i was looking at doing were PTI and Aerial Erector but at the moment both of these jobs are unavailable!

Just wondering if there is a time scale etc to either of these jobs or if someone has waited for one of these jobs before and roughly how long it took to become available.

Cheers

There are no vacancies for these posts as all of this year (Apr09-Mar10)have been allocated. The recruiting plan for 10-11 will not have been published yet. The earliest you can expect these trades to be available again will be after April 2010, unless there is suddenly an urgent requirement for more people in these trades. Both of these jobs require specialist interview and aptitude tests, so it's very likely that they have already interviewed and tested enough people to take account of any last-minute withdrawls from attending Recruit training. If you're set on either of these 2 trades you may have to wait until next year, but stay in contact with the AFCO just in case the situation changes. The 2010 recruiting plan should be issued sometime in late Aug to coincide with the GCSE and A-Level results, so the slots should be known by then (but the start date won't be until Apr 10 onwards)

cheers for the info i guess ive got to choices really then i either join as something else or do a boaring job until next year and hopefully do the job i want then!

just out of curiosity if i joined in a different job how likely is it that i will be able to change trades after so long?

any info is greatly appriciated as the nearest AFCO is about 1 an half hours away so dont want to keep going backwards and forwards all the time just to find out i cnt do what i wanted to

Very, you can generally only remuster after failing trade training. You join up to do the job that you will do throughout your career, however it may develop.

Highly unlikely! Even if the AFCOs tell you that you'll be able to re-muster...don't believe them!! You can only re-muster to an open trade, if you join as another trade by the time you've done your basic training and then your trade training both PTI and AL Erect will have filled up and be closed again. Better to wait for the trade to open and jump in straight away. However PTI is fiercely competitive and Al Erect only recruit a very small number each year so you'll have to be convincing on the Spec Interviews.

A lot of jobs will have a requirement for GCSEs or other civilian qualifications (CQ) as well as attaining the correct score on the AST. Some trades will take people who score well on the AST but don't have the required CQs, these are classed as UQ. Consequently for an intake of 16 recruits they will probably take 14CQ and 2UQ.

With regards unavailable trades, there's a recession on, lots of people have applied for the RAF and there are fewer jobs left, all the popular ones have been filled for the rest of the year so there are only the less popular/harder selection standard jobs remaining.

You cannot expect the RAF to keep jobs back just in case somebody wants it, there has always been a first come first served allocation system and at the moment the first has come and been served.

I can see the RAF becoming choosier and expecting a lot more from prospective airmen, so if you want it you'll need to work harder.

Just noticed this post about the availability of trades. Ive applied to be an S E Fitter and just passed my fitness test but the trade is closed. Has anyone got an idea of when the trade is likely to open again?

Thanks in advance for the replys.

See my first reply (2nd post in this thread) it applies to Squippers too (except I don't think SE Fitt do Spec Interviews!)
