Wasn't sure quite where to put this post, but as it's on the subject of allowances I thought Shiney corner would probably be best. Although I haven't noticed many Shineys gracing the pages of e-goat (probably all busy JPA training?!) ...

Being a home owner, on past postings I have been able to claim refund of legal expenses for selling / buying new home. I'm now posted down south to a much more expensive area property-wise (what I get for my 3 bed detached in Lincolnshire would get me a caravan down south!). After much thought the decision was made to sell up, bank profit (for future use as house deposit when posted back up north), and move into quarters at the new posting.

Today the guy in allowances tells me I cant claim refund of expenses of selling as I'm not buying ... it's an all or nothing deal?

Somebody please tell me that this guy is confused. That would be a wholly unfair system, not only am I being forced out of home ownership but I suffer for it as well and end up out of pocket?

He did say that I have the option to rent and have rental fees paid yardy yarda .... but renting is NOT what I want to get into, it has many pitfalls that I dont want to risk (I thunk long and hard about it ... its not something Id be happy doing).

Again, if this is the case then it's just plain wrong and needs changing. A second opinion from someone more admin minded than I would be most welcome (I can only find reference to selling/buying ... not selling alone)

Thanks in advance,

Disgruntled DI

Renting

DI,

Aye, the shiny one was correct, they will only cough up if you sell and buy in the same move.

I had to make the choice to sell or rent my house in '98, I was caught in the same trap as yourself.

DI, ask for a home owners certificate as it covers instances such as this.

A home owners cert recognises that you are selling a house but not buying one at your new duty unit. You can then use it when you eventually buy a house. It may have a time limit but I cannot remember it. Have a look on the intranet in Publications at AP3392 Vol 2.

I think the time limit is 18 months (but dont quote me) or even for a full tour although you can get extensions to this rather easily.

Cool, thanks guys, there is hope that I'll get my expenses paid back eventually then.

Jobs a good 'un.

I'm about to do the same. I'm posted before JPA but will not have completed the buying part until well after.

Ive sold my place but not yet found a place to buy...

The problem I'm having is on of eligability. No one can give me a straight answer...

The new place of work is about 40miles away from my place. (eligibility states 50miles and / or 1 1/2 hours drive). Thats too far especially as the new training job needs me to be at work at 0745 each day...

My argument is the location in question is at least 1 1/2 hours drive in the morning. (Last try was 1 hr 40mins)

Will this stand up to the allowence nazis? or am I stuffed?

Its worth £5000 to me so rather important.

Also as I am posted before JPA but will not complete until after, how do I apply etc..

My local allownces section don't have a scooby do!

HELP

If your allowances section is unsure, please point them in the direction of Pay and Allowances at HQPTC (may have moved to the new JPAC or will do soon); they should be able to assist your unit scribblies.
