This question will ultimately be answered by the US Embassy, but I am looking for any similar experiences that others may have had and how it impacted any application for a visa to travel to the USA.

In 1992 I was arrested (by USAF military police) at Ramstein AFB for liberating a gizzit on the way back to the accommodation. The paperwork received by the Squadron from USAF listed the offence as "Larceny of private property". My assessment was affected and I was given some other unofficial punishments. The USAF was informed about my punishments and I was told at the time that if I didn’t hear any more, that was the end of it. I never heard any more about it.

I have been mooching around the US Embassy Visa website, inparticular the ESTA Visa Applicability Wizard says "Have you ever been arrested or convicted for any reason in any country, even if the arrest did not lead to a conviction<snip>".

My questions are:

  • Does an arrest by Military Police count?
  • Have any other goaters had similar experiences and not had any problems gaining a visa or am I the only bad boy on this site?

I realise that the only answer worth having will be from the US Embassy, but I would appreciate any info fellow goaters may have.

How long are you going for?

If it's a few weeks holiday then you can fill out a visa waiver on the plane on the way out. (Or could, it's been a few years since I was out there).

If you get asked about it just say you forgot about it as it was x years ago.

They can be awkward sometimes but I would say you'd be OK, being involved in the Stan wil earn you brownie points anyway.

IMHO.

Wrong. You must use ESTA if you wish to use the VWP.

To the OP...

I would suggest you are worrying to much...If you mention it to the shermans then they will make an issue out of it...thats what shermans do. if it was me I would keep quiet.

Yeah... I can't wait to hear metimmee's thrilling report of how he got lifted by the Spams on entry to the US, spent a few months in Gitmo, before becoming Bubba's biatch in Leavenworth for a while...

That'll make your eyes water!:PDT_Xtremez_34:

Surely, that wouldn't have been filed, or at least they won't be able to link up to such a trivial issue - after all this time?

Personally, I'd follow Downsizer's position.... but wear a disguise when you get there!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Long beard and a turban should do it. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

if you have ever been arrested for any reason, not charged, charged found not guilty, found guilty.you need a visa. there is no statute of limitation on this. i got done in 1983 i had to go to the embassy in london for a face to face interview.you have to pay up front and take prove of payment, if you fail the interview thay keep the money.thats not the end of it thay dont have to take the visa at point to entery you can still be refused. after the hassel i had i will never go back again,it spoilt the holiday.thers allways some one else wants my money and says thank you.

Errrm

In 1990 I was deported from the US of A for visa violation - quite simply I didn't have one. I was handed over into the hands of the British Embassy in Toronto.

I have visited the place extensively since using the visa waiver scheme and the more recent online scheme and have never mentioned my crimes - and have always been welcomed in with open arms.

Yes Hu, but what about when they've realised just WHO they've let in??:PDT_Xtremez_42:

I got banged up by the SF on Vogelweh last year for " a verbal altercation " with an SF guy with his hand on his 9mm I said with a smile on my face " your fcukin jokin aren`t you m8 ? " 4 hrs later RAFP came down mentioned that there was no such offence under UK law and therefore under the status of forces agreement I should be released.
Hasn`t stopped me getting ticks in boxes for their places here at the deid.

Before boarding an aircraft get this all sorted out. You don't want to be refused entry when you arrive in the U.S. they will just turn around and stick you on a plane home. In 1975 I was picked up in California with no money and the British Embassy repatriated me, I wasn't deported. Took a while to pay the gov back the money for the flight home but when I came over this time for good, never had a problem at all. Luckily it was before computers were used extensively but now who knows. Sounds to me that it wasn't an attempt to steal anything rather a misunderstanding, but records are kept I am afraid. Better to be safe than sorry, look at poor old Cat Stevens, he was refused entry a couple of years back because his muslim name looked at lot like someone on our watch lists.

If I were you, I'd try and get the visa via RAF channels. See P1 and see if they can help. If you manage to get one via this route, you end up with an 'A2' stamp in the visa (it appears about half way through the long number on the visa at the bottom). This effectively makes it a diplomatic passport and you can get away with a lot more as the passport request has been officially sanctioned by your own government. Might there be any need for you to visit there for RAF purposes?

Can anyone from P1 siggest if a Nato Travel Order might help in these circumstances?
