Is it possible to volunteer for an OOA? I'm not talking about 'special duties' but whatever you would normally get if you were near the top of your own trades list.

The extra money would come in very handy right now as would a break from the rain in Scotland!

Yes. Either trawl through the volunteers page on the manning website, or put AFG as a preference for assignment on JPA.

The best bet is to speak to your Drafter. That way you can normally lay out your location preference and roughly when you want to go. If you are caught in the Project Apollo trap, speak to your Chf Clk and get himt o speak on your behalf. You will find that the Manners are more than accommodating when you are volunteering.

Go with JPABitch's reccomendation. One of my collegues has just done this. To be told a week later that she is going to Afghanistan next week.

I'm sure the drafters are happy to receive volunteers because this means they dont have to mess up their DWR list if the next in line person drops out for whatever reason.

You may find yourself out there over Xmas as there tends to be a spate of debilitating illnesses that occur to those due to do an OOA over this period. Dont expect much notice for your courses though if this is the case. My collegue was informed on the Wednesday and started her 2 week ops course at Lyneham on the Sunday.

Is it wise for a man who already admit's that you had a little financial trouble to try and do an OOA just to make up some extra dosh?

The reason I'm asking is that once you volunteer you are open to being pinged for any OOA post not just areas of op allowance.
You could end up in FI on just your LSA payment which depending on your accrued days may be minimum rate which you could end up spending on beer and food from the NAAFI or extra phone bills to keep in touch with loved ones.
Your family at home will spend pretty much as they normally do apart from a bit less on the food bill, one body out of the house doesn't really affect the utilities.
Plus with free reign to spend while your away you wouldn't be the first bloke to find his missus has blown whatever he was going to save.

All I'm saying is think carefully before you make this choice volunteering does not take you off the main list as many have found when DWR'd within a year.

Volunteers for OOA are treated very well by the drafters, especially with regards location, and time they want to deploy.

Trawl the overseas volunteers list, as there are many listed there, apply in the manner they ask, but also add dates that are inconvenient to you
its worked for me several times
