Anyone ever done a new shape Passat TDi timing belt change?

I am doing one at the weekend for the first time and was wondering if there were any tips etc that anyone found whilst doing this job?

I have already taken the bumber off and it looks like the radiator has to come off to gain access to the bezzler. Any special tools required?

Cheers in advance

Mate, I know we don’t see to see "Eye to Eye" on the GE bit, but this is motors ain't it, it's different.

If your Passat is anything the same as my 51 plate Golf PD130, I would unless you are truly a competent mechanic trained by VW or have £2000 odd, personally get a garage to do it, least you got some come back.

When I was at Tossford, I got a couple of guy’s who, although not trained by VW but what I thought competent to do mine.

R/H wheel off, inner wheel arch out, intercooler out (get new pipe clips, trust me.
Special VW cam/crank locking tools (they paid for it).

When they got round to do it they backed out saying they were not going to risk it (which I give them credit for), they didn’t want to pay for a new engine.
The problem was remove engine mounts, jack engine and the like and then the access once the engine was moved was still not enough to replace the belt. Also, there seemed an absence of timing marks as a back up causing some trepidation on their part because being a PD engine the fuel system running off the cam at a very high pressure, even the slightest error would be catastrophic.

Another thing to look at is the water pump, as VW and hey will advise that you to replace this at the same time due to the impeller working loose.

In the end I took it to VW and it cost a bit, but a least (touching wood here) it’s still running 96,500 miles.

Good Luck

Hope this helps?

I believe..you should change the tensioners at the same time.

Also..why dont you join an online car club that can help you through it??

A timing belt/cambelt can be done DIY..even by someone who hasnt done it before.....I changed the one on my Galaxy just before she went and the one on my vectra needs doing pretty soon so im swotting up on it at the mo..already got the kit!.

Yep Mum you are deffo right there, you should change the tensioners as well they come in the kit along with the idler wheel.
There is no harm in a bit of engineering experimentation and I’m all for that, fix multi million quid aircraft every day but get a garage to do my car. Why is that…..because the aircraft isn’t mine and I won’t have to pay for it when I screw it up? Good luck with the Vecra. He He Knowing snigger.
No Seriously, you go sort that nasty Vauxhall out.

See under the bonnet she is fine, on the road with a map she's a menace :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Nothing yet, I'll find out when I try starting it tonight. Managed to get the electrics hooked up to the chassis & starter motor last night and cranked the engine over without ignition.:PDT_Xtremez_43: (I've been itching to use that smiley since yesterday)

So does her in doors Vectra. Central locking playing up, sometimes the front passenger door unlocks more often it doesn’t. Oh well a trip to flea bay to get new lock actuators.

Thanks everyone for the input.

SCJ its not as bad as your Golf as the bumper and radiator has to come off. I have the full kit with tensioners and rollers etc. I have ordered one of those haynes manuals on cd which should be here soon but if its anything to go by normally it will say 'simply remove'!!!

GT

Ps I am only a GE for 3 more months then back to the tonka fleet so you can rest easy!..............

The discs you get on ebay are copies of the actual VW manuals the vw mechanics use in the garage. You can get them for less than a tenner..
