Hi all,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place (if the admins can let me know where it would be best placed I will shift it!) but I'm interested in joining as an EngO(AS) in 2011.

However, I was wondering if anyone wanted to offer any advice, tips etc.? My biggest concern is being accepted as EngO but then being streamed as CE rather than AS. My background is thoroughly aerospace with almost no experience/qualifications in communications/electronics but when visiting the careers office they were unsure about me joining the AS stream (saying my degree wasn't pure aerospace systems) but said that they did need people for the CE stream (apparently the engineering training after IOT would cover the necessary training in electronics & communications).

I'm a little confused! Either my background precludes me from EngO completely or makes no difference!

Any advice?

Thanks

HF

First of all, your degree will need to be accredited by IMechE or the RAeS. If of course you have the right degree in the first place. For a CE career, your degree will need to be in Electrical or Electronic Engineering with a syllabus that is accredited by the BCS. For AS, you're looking at Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, accredited by the bodies mentioned above. Your University Administrator will be able to tell you if they are.

PM me and I will send you the details of the Engineering Liaison Team at Cranwell who will answer any Q's you have.

To expand on my qualifications, I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering which are certainly accredited with the IMechE (I made sure I'd picked the correct modules to satisfy accreditation). The modules I chose for the degree were all aerospace based (aerodynamics, controlling dynamic systems, propulsion systems etc.)

I also went on to complete a Ph.D in Aerodynamics so have done more study in the area of flow control over wings with a view to improving low speed handling, drag reduction etc.

I will PM you, however, for those details if that would be ok...

Thanks

Jesus, why are you wasting your time with the RAF with those quals!

Seriously though, PM sent with the ELT details.

The first thing you need to realise is that Engineering Officers in the RAF do very little practical engineering; there are opportunities but not at the level you may have studied for or be used to.

Secondly, normally you will only be a JEngO for one tour of your RAF Career.

The third thing is; go CE.

Has this changed recently? I have an aeromechanical degree and I'm CE.

TBH, it's not unheard of. It would mostly depend on the syllabus of your course. Some unis offer Mech Eng courses with a heavy electrical/electronic input and that's fine, as long as it's accredited with the correct body/ies.

A fair comment! Rather than being stuck in an office researching new design features I want to be involved on the ground with running & maintenance before moving up through the jobs to be involved in design (although I know that I won't actually be hands on with the aircraft myself, PG!)

My only fear is that I'm offered a place on the AS stream then once I'm hooked in I'm restreamed to CE. I did the odd bit of electronics during my degree and it was quite fun but I've been interested in aircraft ever since I can remember! I'm flexible in every other way, I don't mind which aircraft I'm posted on, where I'm posted to etc. but only AS will do!

With that in mind, do either of you know when they finalise your stream (is it at the end of IOT?) and when is the last opportunity to 'get-out' if you're not happy with your streaming?

Thanks for all your help so far!

(And thanks for the details via PM, WH!)

In the past, you were streamed during training depending on quals, course progress, vacancies, personal choice, etc. Nowadays, you enter as Eng (AS) or (CE). You will do EOFT which takes place at Cranwell and both streams train together though each specialisation will follow a different syllabus - CE guys learning about wiggly amps, etc whilst AS learn about knuckle dragging and whinging in the T-Bar. Seriously though, you will come in to the discipline of your choosing and follow that course. Unless your degree syllabus covered the aspects that we look for in either stream and was accredited, then you won't be able to rebranch. Not initially anyway.

If you need any more gen, drop me a PM.
