What's the logic behind warning in/out of the mess if you are to be away from your station for 24+ hours?

Are you supposed to warn in/out when you go home for a weekend for example?

If you go on a det to another unit, you'll receive a Mess Bill from them. If you dont warn out of your parent Mess, you'll receive a bill for that mess too.

The logic is that by warning in/out, you only get billed for the time you are on that particular Messes Ration strength.

Warning out at weekends serves no purpose whatsoever. It may have done once upon a time, when the Mess Manager would be working out how many needed feeding, but not any more.

I've never bothered warning out of my parent mess. Nevre can be bothered with the hassle....

Whilst at the College of Knowledge it was enforced from No.1 OACTU mess into CHOM, it was said to prove that it was used to determine if you had to pay food charge for the weekend. Suppose just as a back up to requesting leave on JPA for weekends etc.

Likewise at The Depot on certain courses its enforced for the reasons you've listed. Good old Mr Joy and his staff however never grumbled if you rocked up hung over for breakie on a Saturday morning and weren't supposed to!
