Old RAF base near to Burtonwood Services on M62, some hangers there as well as peri tracks and bit of a runway. Hoping some of you anoraks can help me.

It was RAF Burtonwood. Father flew there quite a few times before it got closed down. Then the M62 came along and was pasted over the top of the runway itself, literally bisecting the airbase.

By the way, it was also the largest World War 2 airbase in the whole of Europe as it was for the Yanktastic Flying Fortresses to operate from to go and attack the rest of Germany occupied Europe.

There are three L type hangars left which are used by hauliers.
Every thing else has gone. I bought my first house on the edge of the airfield as they were ripping up the runways. Used to walk my dogs over there.

Errr - sorry, it was never an operational station; it was the USAAF's maintenance base.

Was it? Hmm, okay then. So what base(s) did the Fortresses fly from to go and attack German occupied Europe? :PDT_Xtremez_41:

Funnilly enough it was RAF Burtonwood - honest

RAF Burtonwood was a Royal Air Force base 2 miles NW of Warrington in Cheshire. During World War II and the Cold War it was also used by the United States Air Force and United States Army. It was also known as USAAF station 590.

Right, what former RAF Station was this, and used by the USAF in WW2!!

My god, Your Correct!

I used to drive down the Ringwood Road which runs along the main runway and never realised it was an airbase until a last year!.

Well done that chap!. :PDT_Xtremez_28:

Lol!!!
I have a copy of .........
Military Airfields in the British Isles 1939-1945 which I paid £59 for 2nd hand.
It is the bible as far as UK military airfields are concerned.
It's a bit like rocking horse manure these day's.

To continue this theme, can anyone identify this place..........

Yep, sure is. Spent my formative years living near New Milton, about 10 miles SW of the place. Seem to remember it was great for riding the old trail bike around before things like that became illegal!!
