Howdy y'all!

Joined the legions of goaters as I'm currently in the process of applying for a go in one of them there plane thingies.

Being 21 I've just about figured out what I want from my life. The RAF offers me lots of possibilities, adventure, reasonable pay etc. The most important point though is I have a strong desire to protect those around me, my country and those who cannot protect themselves. I also want to feel as though what I do makes a difference. The RAF seems to offer me a good chance to achieve these desires.

Anyway enough waffle, I'm sure I'll have this possitive attitude beaten out of me eventually. :PDT_Xtremez_15:

Fairwell, take care.

well the very best of luck to you me young fella me lad.

Plenty of advice available to you here if you want it - just ask - but remember to take it with the odd pinch of salt - we can be a cynical bunch at times.

Welcome to the goat.

Welcome tranx and good luck with the new career path, but is 21 not a bit old to be joining as a pilot?:PDT_Xtremez_21:

Enjoy the Goat and all the banter - and you're probably right, that positive attitude will soon wear off!!:PDT_Xtremez_31:

Yes 21 is a bit old, 23 is the cut-off age. Hopefully this will give me a mature edge and experience in dealing with the general **** of life that the other applicants might be missing, along with their favourite teddy bear! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Best of luck to you. You might find this guys selection diaries useful to you (link) to get a general feel for the process. Beware of when it was written as some points of fact may be incorrect.

metimmee, thats an excellent link you've got there. It's helped me in regards to what I should be doing to prepare myself and what to expect when I get there. I'd suggest plopping that link on every prospective officer's lap!

Cheers!

Perhaps one of the 'admins' can put it as a permanent link on the home page?

Look at different aircraft

Look at different aircraft

Tranx,

Good luck with your application mate, but a word to the wise if you are going aircrew - a colleague of mine went through OASC to formalise his transfer from the RN to the RAF (admin nause - but that's another subject) and he was surprised about how many applicants wanting to go aircrew were fixated on Typhoon to the exclusion of every other aircraft. If you are keen to be a pilot it is worth looking at which aircraft types are available and which will give you greater career flexibility/opportunities. While the Tupperware Jet looks nice and apparently flies well, it will not have a firm role for several years due to the issues with air to ground roles. Make sure you are aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the other types - GR4s go away to a place with a swimming pool to wash the sand off and will be one of the workhorse of the fleet for years to come (if they can keep flying that long!). The harrier is heavily workled at the moment to the point they'll be bloody lucky to have any pilots left in the not too distant future, but hey, if you want to get to the sharp pointy end of the FJ fleet it may be for you (if you're good enough).

With the exception of the AD fleet all of the RAF inventory are heavily involved overseas so make sure in your interview you are able to discuss what they are doing and make sure you don't get fixated on the Buffoon - From the previously mentioned colleague a lot of the bright sparks had concentrated on that particular aircraft and had not really looked in depth into the llimitations it operates under now and will nin the future, as well as ignoring the capabilities and commitments of the muds, tankers, transports and helos.

Just food for thought - look beyond the sexier pieces of kit and think about those that are doing the work.

Hope the above is useful and good luck for the future

Brilliant, my first thread on e-goat already has links to disturbing sexual practises in it!

Cheers for the advice on looking into the less promenant aircraft of the RAF.
