OK, as en England fan I have to say I'm chuffed at our national side's start to the WC qualifiers but somewhat wary as well.
[Cynic mode]
Because, something weird is going on here folks, England have played 4 WC qualifiers, 3 of them away including what should have been the hardest group game against Croatia, won the lot and now lead the group by five points. They haven't set the footballing world on fire in the process but, remarkably, have done so with Emile Heskey playing as the target man!
Years of having the flames of hope kindled and then p1ssed upon I know England don't do things this way. Our national side has to huff and puff, scrape draws from the jaws of victory, and end up sweating on the result between Sweden and Russia to make sure they go into a play-off.
So when are Fabio's lads going to get nose bleeds at the head of the group, wobble and fall over? The only thing that comes with more certainty is the press getting all excited over the current run of form, trumpeting the side as potential WC winners, and then p1ssing all over them when it goes wrong.

And to follow up...
[Rant]
WTF is it with the England away games being shown live only on some footnote of a subscription TV station based in freakin' Ireland? Waiting for the highlights last night was like being back in the 1970s; at the end of the news the result was shown on screen with the warning..'if you don't want to know, look away now'.
WTF is THAT all abot? Was it too much for our fcukin national broadcaster to outbid the nobodies at Setantantanta for the rights to screen these games? The viewing figures are, apparently, pathetic as increasing numbers of fans refuse to shell out more cash to a station they wouldn't otherwise watch just to see 5 live games involving the national side. I'd imagine that many, like me, choose to stick two fingers up to Setanta and watch the matches on an internet stream, its the only way to do it IMHO.
So next time, can our terrestrial broadcasters get their act together and outbid Bogtrotter TV, whose subscription clauses make cancelling a process more difficult than claiming a tax rebate, so we can watch our national side in action, even if it does mean doing so from behind the sofa!!!!!!!!
[Rant Off]
