A woman in my village is 104 yrs old and still drives. Any opinions on this?:PDT_Xtremez_42::PDT_Xtremez_42:

If her eyesight is OK and reactions are deemed to be good enough by a Doc then why not?

I think after a certain age you have to have a yearly medical anyway... (think BTW!)

Yup too old !!!......unless she drives at or within the speed limit, safely...........who would know but it sounds way too old to be driving !!

Crack on......................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Loads of people are probably going to disagree with me here but here goes; after a certain point in your life even if you still have the physical ability to drive correctly, there is still the problem of the mental ability to make correct decisions and react to them in time.

I spend a lot of my time driving especially on motorways/autobahns and the number of elderly people I see who are driving too slow or in an erratic manner is worrying. The volume of traffic on the roads these days is huge and the people driving have less time or interest in other people and the stress level is very high.

So I say yes a 104 year old is too old to be driving, I think that after a certain age every one (including me) should be retested, and if they fail then have their licence taken away.

Currently once a person reaches 70 their driving licence must be renewed, and then renewed every 3 years. There is, however, no requirement to retake the driving test. To renew a licence, all an OAP has to do is fill in a form and (if they are honest) declare any medical conditions that may affect their ability to drive. The DVLA may, if a condition is declared, insist that the driver is examined by a doctor. Once drivers reach 70 they are legally obliged to have an eye test; I'm unsure whether proof of this must be included with the renewal form or not, nor am I sure of the frequency of the eye tests.

There are murmerings that over 70s should retake a test.

However, when you look at the standard of driving of some people under 70, then it is apparent that there are good and bad drivers in every age group. At least the elderly, for the most part, seem to err on the side of caution when driving, and are never in a great rush, unlike some of the planks I have to contend with on my daily commute!
