Hi Goaters,

Some advice would be welcome. Am currently OOA and looking forward to coming home. One of the things that Mrs IDO and I would like to do on my return is have a night or two in London and 'catch a show' (I really fancy seeing War Horse at the National Theatre).

I've been to London a few times in the past and been hit and miss with accommodation, what I'm after are some recommendations. Plus if anyone knows of any offers for our type of people, I'm more than willing to play on the 'returning war veteran' angle to knock a few quid off / get a free bottle of bubbly etc

Obviously there's the Victory and UJ Clubs, but having never stayed there before I'm not sure if they represent good value for money.

Besides, it's been a tough few months for the good lady stuck at home alone, she deserves something special ... I'm after as much 'special' as I can get on a limited budget!

Thanks in advance ...

I've stayed at the UJ club a couple of times and always found it spot on. They've moved away from the typical SLA furniture so, to me, it represents great VFM.

Think Op Bonus and splash out mate! The VSC does do the "Haven for Heroes" deal that knocks it down to half price but to be honest get onto Superbreaks and you can probably get in a deal with tickets and dinner chucked in for a sensible price.

We did it a couple of years back, stayed in a nice hotel in Knightsbridge (Millenium Baileys I think), dinner in a nice place in Soho then on the theatre - set me back a couple of hundred but would have been more if I had booked it all seperately.

Don't bother with the car though - will cost you through the nose to park and other than arrive or depart you wont use it. Get the train, first class if you book early enough, and enjoy a drink or 2 on the way up to that fancy London town.

Can you elaborate on that? If it's sh1te, I'll remove it from my visit the smoke accommodation list.

It looks all very nice downstairs... All plush. Get upstairs and it stinks of musty old p1ss. The rooms are old and dirty looking. It is also on the blues and twos route to a major London A&E.... So expect lots of noise from ambulances all fcuking night and very little sleep. I stayed with the kids... The residents of the VSC (yes it has them) are old duffers who lookdown on kids (mine are well behaved btw) and make it known to you as well. TBH,I never felt as unwelcome as I did as a serviceman in a 'service' hotel. Never again.

Cheers mate, that'll do for me, off the list it is. You'd think we? as a Service community/body/whatever could provide a top notch place in the smoke, never mind, the bean counters win.:PDT_Xtremez_09:

One to keep an eye on for their packages...owned by the Earl of Bradford and right on the edge of Covent Garden so you can spend a while in the Crusting Pipe sipping wine and listening to the opera singers, couple in the P and J/Cove, catch the happy hour in Henrys cafe and wine bar then stroll the 70yds to Porters, cheeky 3 course then onto a show perhaps...

just before me and mrs fairy went down to that there london town and stayed at the ujc, found the place very nice, the location is perfect as its opposite waterloo tube and about 2 mins walk to the southbank area where you can walk down to shakespeares globe or sit in a nice boozer (i think its the founders arms) right opposite st pauls which looks spectacular at night. if you find yourself at a bit of a loose end at any point i highly recommend going to vinopolis at london bridge, we had a three course meal in their michelin starred restuarant, a wine tasting lesson and around 15 different wines to taste out of a choice of hundreds all for around 70 quid each, in my eyes that was a bargain!

Highly recommend the UJC. The bar prices are pretty good for London and the food is excellent in the restaurant. I stay ther lots of times and have NEVER been disappointed.

As a member I also use it when going through London or just up for the day and soemtimes just dump my bags off in their baggage room which is great.

They have nice family rooms and flats available as well. It is a properly run ex service charitable Club and deserves the support. Why not take advantage of the Free Membership all serving service people have.

Totally agree use it whenever in town handy for the West End and the South Bank.

If you're wanting to take in a show, try www.lastminute.com. They do great deals on dinner and a show.

I took my Mum to see Chicago and have lunch at Kitchen Italia, £37.50 for both of us for a one course lunch, glass of wine and best available seats for the show. (The cover price of the tickets was £35 each).

The best available seats just happened to be second row in the dress circle and there was no one in front of us. Couldn't have had a better view if we were sat on the stage. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Just got back from London. Stayed at the Grange in Holburn. Nice 5* hotel not too far from everything and of course near a tube. Very happy and would go again.
