If you can't access the start button to get into even a guest account, find another XP user. In User Accounts in the control panel there is a 'prevent a forgotten password' tag which prompts you to load a floppy. It will write a prog to the disk. On startup on the forgotten machine make sure the disk is in and the 1st boot is the A Drive (In the BIOS/setup) and take it from there. Never tried it myself but that is the road I would go down for starters.

could always boot to safe mode (f5 before the big Win XP screen) and use that to navigate to the users desktop.

There are ways and means of getting to files if needed. Only trouble is, if the documents are not shared (i.e. hidden from other users) then apart from hacking the password, theres not alot you can do about it....

If you can get into Safe Mode, That is your core Administrator account so you can go to the Control Panel, then User Accounts and Reset the Password from there.
If you can't access that, You can go here; Emergency Boot CD
Download the ISO file, Burn to a CD. Put in your machine and reboot. Make sure your system is set to boot from CD's though (changeable in the BIOS if necessary.)
Once the disc has booted, there is an Application to reset all your passwords to blank ones if required.
Use with care though, and follow any instructions very carefully or you could end up doing some damage.
I have used it a few time in the past myself though to recover passwords from friends computers if they have locked themselves out with no problems.

Not so old buddy. If you boot your machine with a Linux live CD, your hidden Administrator documents swim magically into view.
Mad Mo have a work with Code Monkey, he should be able to tell you more.
The version I used was Knoppix.

So you guys had better be more creative in hiding the the porn :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I can concur with SBs idea of using a Knoppix CD, i've used it many a time to recover some documents from NTFS partionos in XP without passwords/booting OS before wiping a system and starting again.

P.S Even if you install over the top(new OS) without wiping the partition you will might not be able to access docs, i have seen this first hand.
