Thanks for the gen, glad I am using Vista, just installed SP1 and no problems so far. Maybe this is a deliberate ploy to get people to change over, I hope work sees this and either waits until SP3 is fixed or does not update.

Storm in a teacup.

Microsoft's service pack three (SP3) for Windows XP has caused havoc on hundreds of PCs, just hours after it was released as an automatic update.

Considering the amount of users who have installed SP3 hundreds doesn't sound too many. I would wager that these same 'hundreds' would have had crashes or BSODs regardless.

I have installed SP3, using an AMD CPU without incident along with many thousands - not hundreds. XP all the way, for me. You can keep your Vista, Mister.

Out of interest Monobrow, do you have an AMD chip as suggested in the article?

I am, but theres so many variables that it's just not funny. I get a STOP message on boot with 5 hexidecimal memory addresses, and out of them 5, only two got ANY results back from google...

meh :PDT_Xtremez_38:

I got SP via the usual 'update' thing, and left the HP machine (Intel P4) to it.

The snag I have is trying to use the DVD RAM. Put a disk in and re-boot, re-boot. Bloody nuisance!

If someone can suggest a cure (apart from going back to a Restore point), I hope it gets published!!

system restore and ignore the update. :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I make it a habit not to install any of MS's "quickfixes" unless there is somthing actually going wrong with my pc.

SP3 made mine constantly reboot, I restored and aint going to bother with it again.
