As someone who considers their self a supplier and not a store man, I came close today to feeling the shame and embarrassment of telling a fellow supplier that they could not have an item to clear a D state at their unit, because my unit might require said item some time in the distant future when god forbid we actually have an aircraft. The decision to control the stock at my unit was taken to protect Initial procurement items, and whilst I can see the need to protect ones budget in an environment where every penny needs to be counted and controlled surely a serviceable spare will always be of better use on an aircraft that needs it rather than on a shelf gathering dust. I would be grateful for any views others might have on this subject. I did mange to issue the item.

Can I take it then that you don't have any shame in telling a techy that they can't have a bit to clear a d-state? :PDT_Xtremez_14:

I take it it came from much higher not to issue the item. Were they still living in WW2.:PDT_Xtremez_25:

Let me guess some Sports Non Compliance Officer who is pandering to British waste of space.

...I did mange to issue the item.
Nice one mate.

A few years back I was a shift boss on a SAR flight. One saturday afternoon I was in need of an item to get one of our Sea Kings back to a serviceable condition. According to the global system there was only 1 of these items and it was controlled by the IPT. Eventually I got in contact with the Duty IPT officer who refused to release it because (that immortal line!) "...it may be needed elsewhere"!!!
I tried reasoning with him but to no avail so eventually I asked him for his name and home address.
"Err, why do you want that?" he asked.
"Well" said I "...when I can't get an aircraft in the air to go and save our next customer I want to pass your details onto his/her parents or kids or partner so that you can explain why he/she died".
"Oh... there's no need for that!" was his reply.
Interestingly, the item was released.

Sometimes a quick reality check is needed. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Totally agree, someone on the other end of the phone who has no idea what is going in at a different location should not be in a position to refuse any item.
I've never had to refuse an item to anyone on the grounds that someone else might need it, and i will do my best to make sure i never do.
If someone else needs it tomorrow, then they will be out of luck, and at least the supplier will have a genuine reason for not giving the item to whoever needs it.
