Afghan pull out

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
So the yanks and ourselves are, in the main, moving out of Afghanistan was it worth the 20 years we spent there?

Chief of Defence Staff General Sir Nick Carter said "All those who fought in Afghanistan can hold their heads up very high," .........."The British military was not defeated on the battlefield. They showed remarkable adaptability against a very cunning and nefarious opponent, and they showed phenomenal courage under great pressure."

The allied military didn’t lose anything in Afghanistan except, sadly, lives. It is the politico’s, since 1990, that have lost reputation, faith and belief in their deluded actions. Typically they have again abused the military to fight un-needed battles for belligerent and petty knee-jerk reactions.

Sadly, i think the military did lose something. Yet again, as with Vietnam, it was proved publicly that all the hi-tech weaponry in the world will always lose out to asymmetric warfare where ruthlessness to all others, a bitter resentment and a willingness to tolerate large combat losses with patience will always win in the end.....

We in the west have spent decades trying to replace, or keep safe, the man on the ground with technology and minimising our own & civilian losses, but technology doesn't win 'hearts & minds' the same way as people do.....

Not going well and today's suicide bombing only makes things worse. Currently saying four US marines amongst the dead and numerous Afghan civilians

What an absolute mess that country is in and the Delta version of Covid hasn't even taken hold yet. Loads of people crammed into a small area no masks and mostly unvaccinated every chance of it becoming a so called super spreader event. Your AK47 and a personal copy of the Koran won't stop Covid. Many many dark days ahead for the Afghan population.

The numbers keep rising. What next for the USA and Joe Biden?

However senior officials told BBC the death toll could be as high as 60, with 120 more believed to be injured

The Associated Press tonight reported 12 US servicemen - 11 Marines and one Navy medic - have been killed

Sleepy Joe has announced the US is going after ISIS-K "at a time, in a manner and in a place of our choosing" or words to that effect. Let's see how long he keeps to that.

If Joe can remember who he is tomorrow.

Whilst most of these groups have a common enemy, the west, hardly any of them like each other and rarely tolerate others who don’t agree exactly with their idea of how a society should be run.

Thoughts as ever with those that died.

Given that the most culpable individual is already spattered across a good piece of Kabul's real estate and those that put him up to it are likely to be quite happy to go and get their own personal 24 virgins (prefer an experienced woman myself - but that's another story), i really don't see that his threat is much of a threat.....

Why do western politicians have so little understanding of the mindset of middle eastern religious fanatics?

Why do western politicians have so little understanding of the mindset of middle eastern religious fanatics?
Simple. It's because western politicians have had their brains turned to mush after 40 years of neoliberal dogma.

I do see China, as part of it's strategic foreign policy aims in the region becoming chummy with the Taliban. China is, I presume, looking to both invest in infrastructure projects and fill the power vacuum left by the departing western allies. However given how the Chinese treat their own ethnic Muslim population they and the Taliban seem to be ill matched buddies.

There's a significant rare-earth-metals shortage globally (a lot of which are essential for hi-tech manufacturing and goods, which China does both of), and Afghanistan has these in abundance. So it makes sense for them to want to get in there as soon as the West moves out. China also shares a (very small) border with them, so again it's worth keeping your neighbours placid. I can quite easily picture China getting the Taliban to mine for them using the locals (and not caring about the treatment of workers, etc).

You mean no H&SAW, unions, collective bargaining, sick pay, paid holidays etc etc Tut tut, never in a socialist workers paradise......

Quite a few MPs seem to have been to war in the Middle East, unfortunately no ministers have been.

Because it is the perfect socialist workers paradise there is no need for such things.

You do realise we have possible four more years of endless government comical catastrophes. Considering the endless flow from Rubber Dinghyland aka France. HMS Brexit still moored nay beached until repairs are done. The fever for Eco-Friendly military with Gliders made from old toilet rolls. Army tanks or singular loaded out on Friday afternoon. Dear old Navy reduced to Coracles. With today's education you will be lucky to find a student with less A*+++++++ can get past Capita. I wouldn't worry going to war, as we have the right ingredients here already to start one in our own backyards. When it comes to voting next time the usual clowns local will still win and the merry-go-round will continue.

Watching the situation develop during the past few days has been interesting and in much of the sense, terrifying.

The Taliban has inherited billions of dollars worth of US weaponry that was either abandoned by American Forces, or of the seized equipment that was gifted to the ANG.

Biden has pulled the last US troops out of AFG and quite literally has shrugged his shoulders at the unfolding atrocities in the newly renamed Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Britain in the meantime has been posturing over a new wave of airstrikes to take out the evolving position of ISIS-K.

In the meantime, the new, "reformed" Taliban have begun dishing out their methods of fairness with beatings, killings and that's only what's being reported. Some commentaries are suggesting that a newly energised Taliban and their ideology could spark a holocaust of types in Afghanistan and beyond.

British and European politicians of all flavours are uniting in the condemnation of the Biden administration and China are eyeing up the vast mineral and Copper resources for themselves while the West squabbles over the mess that is now coming to bite us in ways we don't even know about.

What now?

Taliban can sit in government, but without playing nicely with the world, they will find it much harder to stay safe in their palaces.
