Right ,

From 1983

L Mech AR (Air Radar)
L Mech AC (Air Comms)
L Mech FS (Flight Systems)

Once Fitters Course done replace the Mech with Tech

Straight in as a Direct Entry you were L Tech ** straight after basics and trade.

Straight in as one of the chosen.. Apprentice You were L Eng Tech AC/AR or Leng Tech FS you were then given Cpl after 1 year.

In 1992/3 ish they decided to amalgamate the trades and you became A Tech AV

Then in 1999/2000 ish we moved to TG1 and became A Tech AV but the A Tech AE (Aircraft electricians) were now in the same trade.

We are now still Fairies but there is an element that can't understand waveguide theory and still insist on searching for earths when fault finding, instead of looking for a signal path.

Hope this helps

......nearly .Yes my friend , it does help . It also makes me wonder who got the OBE for all those changes .(I still am not sure which of the listed trades cover ATech AV , though obviously it should have been TG1 from a long time back ) . As we used to tell the Airframe Blokes " The airframe is just the chassis for the avionics "

All of them. And Electrician.

Riggers and Sooties are also Multi-skilled into the same trade as well now.

Nobody for years and years and years (a long time) has been drawing a decent wage and getting away with saying 'I am only Air Radar, I cannot do Air Comms!

ASOp (Areospace Systems Operators) or " Scopies" where employed by the government(MOD)
to keep the highly skilled, talented, handsome and extremely well endowed, LTech AD or JAFAD`s busy.
This was usually done by pouring coffee onto consoles or grinding chinagraph pencil into everything.
A study found that once the ASOp trade formed and wrought havoc on the linesman Air Defence radar system,
and AD`s had to actually do some work, WRAF and local civilian girls pregnancy rates dropped by 78.2%.

Was it our fault that the Soviets decided to drop the ball and go bust leaving us steely eyed, ever alert, cold war warriors (medals still pending) with nothing to do on a night shift?
By the way, I still didnt find it funny when you JAFADs put the video map in on the BJ127 upside down, hurt my neck!!

I got the impression that with the "simplification" of the airborne equipment, changes in servicing policy ('send it back') there was no longer quite the need for an educated, trained, elite set of Mr Fixits clustered round a poorly aircraft, and it became a simple "black-box swapper" type of trade.

At one time, a dead wrist watch could be taken to the Nav Inst bay where, for a small token, said watch would be fixed. Similarly the Radar bay was the place for your dead TV, or the Wireless bay for your HiFi (things were a little flexible, you understand). But all this expertise has shrivelled.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to return to the Wireless Bay and do what I can to a poorly STR18b.

Ah, that takes me back ... The Ferranti BJ 127 ... a Navy stores computer ... keeping the Ruskies at bay !!!

And (depending on the luck of your posting) the GL161, SLEWC, DIALECT, ASMA, Plotting tables, real Totes that you wrote backwards on and HF200 (Heights, every scopies dream Friday morning after the Bop night job). Sniff, :S nostalgia, gets you right at the back of the throat!!!!
