Another Triumph for BEngO's motoring advice.

My dad wanted a new (or nearly new) 5 Door hatch for his retirement conveyance and Grandfather duties. He was thinking Focus, Astra etc. I took him round Fords, Astras and the new Civic. A major factor in the choice was of course my mum, who didn't want anything 'fussy' and 'can't be doing with all these buttons and gadgets'

So the civic (with all it's space-age styling and gimmicks) was out.

I suggested Focus Ghia or Titanium and to leave the astra alone as it suffers with a lack of interior space over the focus.

Although taken with the Focus Ghia, my folks didn't like the 'tacky' faux mahogany and preferred the simplicity of the Zetec and Titanium interior trim. Mum wanted leather seats but budget constraints and the fact that it tends to only be available on the Ghia put pay to that but the titanium comes with part-leather seats as standard.

My Dad has wisely plumped for a new (pre-registered with about 3k off list!) 56 plate Focus Titanium. It comes with plenty of kit: air-con, hetaed windscreen (great for frosty mornings and ageing hands), CD player, auto headlights, auto wipers etc and it benefits from a standard supension set-up so it's a nice smooth ride as opposed to the firm ride of the zetec.

My work there was done - here's wishing my dad many happy miles.

Bengo you are leg end in your own lunchtime:PDT_Xtremez_30:

OK,

I want an unbreakable, cheap to buy easy to drive must be able to do 30 miles a day on a thimble of petrol for my missus to go to work in?

Budget about 2 grand, cheap insurance since she just lost her no claims stoopid bugger.

BEngO,

As an expert(?) in all things German and mid-range:PDT_Xtremez_42: could you please help to clear up my current confusion? I keep seeing one of those BMW 3 series hatchback thingies knocking around town with 'M' badging and some body mods.

I though BMW weren't doing an M version of the hatch. Is the owner another twunt pretending his car is something it's not or am I misinformed?

The only reason I ask is that it doesn't look like your normal BMW + Evo-Stick + Halfords abortion.

Bit of a paradox there me old. You see if you want really cheap insurance (ie insurance Gp 1) you need to buy a more expensive brand new car (Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Toyota Aygo). Cheap used cars for less than 2k will attract a premium on insurance because they tend to be easier to nick and chances are, they won't be so well looked after by their owners and more prone to mechanical failure that could cause an accident.

For a cheap, economical car, Look for a used Nissan Micra or a Toyota. The Mk IV fiestas and even older ford Kas are worth a look too. For your lowest insurance premiums, look for something with a 1-litre engine.

You could always try your luck with an older lesser-known make such as a Daihatsu Charade if image isn't a concern and you want to drive around with a paper bag on your head - but it will be very cheap, very frugal, and ultra reliable motoring.

However, these cheap, older cars attract higher insurance premiums.

BEngO's pick? look for a 2000/Y Micra 4 door, 1.0 for around £1900 - look for one run by an OAP since new (there are plenty around).

Hope this helps.

What sort of Hatch? and what age? If it's a 1-Series and less than about 18 months old, it could very well be a BMW 130i MSport. Very nice, very quick and very expensive.

Not sure about 3 series compact, but the M sport badges got plastered on many things through the years (E36 318i coupe Msport springs to mind :PDT_Xtremez_34: )

That surprises me. I though they had tried to keep it quite exclusive. A bloke I went to college with had the MSport bumper stolen off his standard Beemer (fitted by a previous owner). He went to BMW to price up a replacement and was asked to provide an MSport chassis number before they'd supply him one.

You are correct, but we are talking early-mid nineties when MSport appeared all over. MSport did tinker with lots of models but they were genuine MSport with tweaked suspension, firmed-up steering, LSDs etc.

Nowadays, you can have the 'Sport' trim but the M badge is reserved for M3, M5, M6, 330i MSport and MSport high-spec tourers (330i Touring, 530 and 545).

Basically, the Hatch may well be a genuine 'M' model.

Especially if it looks like this:

Dear Mr Bengo i had a saxo like my Dad Kevin but it is a little bit broken now and he won't pay up the 25K child support he owes my mum so I can buy a new one. He says to get on me fcukin'g bike but I haven't got one. Mum says I should smack my other dad Bruce in the mouth till he coughs up enough for a car.

I have seen a dead smart Nova for £250 and its only got 2,000 miles on the clock, I can't quite make out the last 3 numbers though.

Will this be a good buy do you think?

for you? Yes.

don't bother with tax, insurance or an MoT. That will conform to at least 16 different stereotypes.

maybe you could have a look at similar Novas here: www.barryboys.co.uk

An LDV Sherpa or an old Transit should do the trick. Any old piece of cr@p Luton will do really. Or maybe an old horse box? or, If the Top Gear Team and/or Brainiac haven't destroyed them all - and old Eldis Caravan and some amateur carpentry.

Right.

ANyone got any GENUINE motoring queries about REAL cars and their use?

please?

Ok bengo.....

I got a Mondeo, and the front tyres have both gone completely bald on the outside edge of the tyre.

Both inside edges have tread, almost like the wheels are angled like this....

\=====/

is that possible without having been through the PS school of suspension fitting??

the angle (if it's there) is completely non visible (unlike my diagram)

That'll be your tracking mate.

Get down to kwik fit, they'll straighten that up for you for about £15. It'll save you a fortune in tyres.

(And yes, your diagram was right, that's exactly what's happening).

As the good Oh Sir says, it does sound like tracking (a bit 'tow-in') but it might also be the camber. Some negative camber is ok for a FWD car like the modeo but in your case it would be positive.

Kwik fit would be a good place to go - they have laser alignment equipment and will sort you out for about 20 quid or so. You will find that once it's sorted, as well as saving cash on reduced tyre wear, you'll also see an improvemnt on fuel economy.

So don't wait.

thought so, but i thought that was more to do with the angle of the direction of travel like steering. Didn't think that would affect the vertical angle......

best get the ol mota booked in me ol' china

Ok..i have a 2001 MKII Ford Galaxy 1.9TDi, now when i hit a certain speed..roughly 60mph, the passenger side wiper arm rattles like the wind is getting under it and its a contstant rattle against the window. Now i have checked that it is at the correct tension against the screen and i have changed the wipers.

What else should i check?

What are your thoughts on these "Hydrostar" add ons which improve economy by adding Hydrogen to the fuel mix ?

Nothing else you can do I don't think, unless Bengo has an idea.

All I can think of is to buy a new blade, but get one that has one of the little "wing" things on it. As you go faster, it pushes the blade onto the screen more firmly, stopping the rattling. It worked on my last car. Available from any car spares shop.
