Driver survives 200ft cliff fall

A man and his dog were "lucky to be alive" after a 4x4 plunged almost 200ft (60m) over a sheer cliff.

The driver was thrown from the Vauxhall Frontera at Chapman's Pool, near Swanage, Dorset. His calls for help were heard by a crew of a nearby yacht.

It took rescuers about 20 minutes to locate him in thick undergrowth. His dog was thrown out of the vehicle on the way down but has been found unhurt.

The driver suffered two broken legs and is undergoing surgery.

I hope mine looks after me that well.:PDT_Xtremez_43:

Now if it had been a Hilux, he'd have been able to drive it away with no injuries. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Now everyone that lives near a cliff will have a reason to buy a monsterous 4x4 with HUGE bullbars on the front, a reason other than:

Just in case you come across a stray Rhino in the supermarket car park.

In case you get stuck on the grass verge after driving 400M to drop your kids off at school.

:Indigenous people from Oakham, Rutland take note:

No one ever takes this quite real problem seriously, until it affects them.

HERE

Don't take the risk, fit bullbars. Your family will thank you.

A valid argument for South Africa.

But I cant quite work out the odds of a stampeding pachyderm deciding to kick the **** out of your car in this country.

I would say they are quite low odds.

However we do live in what is supposed to be a free country, so any count wanting them can buy them can nip into his local Halfords and get all Daktari'd up to the nines. :PDT_Xtremez_27:

Nice on Rojaws, the last line is absolutely perfect
The parks board confirmed on Monday that the rhino had not been injured.
:PDT_Xtremez_14: What a relief...... :PDT_Xtremez_15:

Oh aye, I'm not having a pop at every person in a big motor, I have an oversized motor vehicle myself, I have a use for mine though,

If you had seen what bullbars do to pedestrians and other road users you may change your mind on this purely decorative item.

firestorm, somehow I think being hit by a big vehicle (let alone any vehicle) is going to hurt a little bit! Would you want all wagons to be banned because of their size and rather pedestrian unfriendly front ends? :PDT_Xtremez_35:

It's not the size, its the ergonomics. A low impact with bull bars is much more serious than a vehicle of equal size without them.

...and? What if you get hit by a vehicle that's larger than the vehicle with them? What damage would that do?

..........or hit by a fuel tanker with spikes on?:PDT_Xtremez_06:
I posted a fact, being hit by a vehicle with bull bars will do more damage than being hit by a vehicle with out. If you don't like that I'll not be losing any sleep.

What I disagree with was an opinion given as a fact. Bullbars are not all decorative items.

They are unless you are in the Oz Bush, or the wilds of Alaska. Not round Swindon town centre.

Personally I have a fcuk off great snow plough on the front of my micra. I don't feel its decorative, it helps when we get blizzards howling through Kings Lynn and I have to get to Tescos for 20 B&H.
::P:
Plus, if I hit any pedestrians, they are gently nudged into the gutter rather than having their limbs pulped.

So they are needed in urban 4x4's and vans for what reason? It's not an opinion its a fact. I've specialised on RTC's for over 12 years.
The by product of this decorative item is carnage.

Then you must be blind, or ignorant, of where they are used. Just because they're used inside cities doesn't make them all decorative items. What about vehicles that may never see anything other than rural road networks? Or ones that don't see anything but fields with livestock in?

What about the ones that are featured on competition vehicles, that too will rarely see anything but rural roads and maybe the odd motorway?

What about expeditionary vehicles? They can't quite easily just go all the way from the UK to whatever country without one on and then plonk it on out there.

I could go on, I stand by my view quite strongly. They are not all (note, the word "all") decorative items.

Most are though, except for the highly specialised (and rare) examples you have given.

Simply meant if you have them on and you don't need them you are a cnut.::P:

I won't disagree with most being intended for something completely different to the whole purpose of them. Although not living in a city means that the majority of the times I do see them on a vehicle, it's on a vehicle that is used in that line of "work" where one is quite useful...

Well if you get hit by a car with bull bars on, you will learn a very inportant lesson...

Don't play in the road because your gonna get hurt:PDT_Xtremez_31:

If you don't need them and they adorn your vehicle then they are decorative. The majority of people with them have them for decorative reasons. If you have them on the farm then great. If you have them doing the Paris Dakar, fantastic. If you drive around with them were people are you're a muppet.
Shame you forgot to read, "So they are needed in urban 4x4's and vans for what reason?"
