Yet again the great neanderthal British public display their dysfunctionality, lack of tolerance and complete disregard for their fellow man when it comes to subjects like this.

Does it really matter? Does it really (and I mean REALLY) hurt to see someone tow a caravan behind their car? Is it anything remotely to do with you or anyone else whether they have a caravan or not? They pay tax as well, divvent ye knaa?

Seems to me that the British disease of the noughties is to have way too much to say about other people's habits, belongings and affairs. What concerns me more is the petrolhead disease prevalent on the UK's roads of trying to break the sound barrier everywhere in their Citroen Saxo or Nissan Insult, whatever. Mind you, at least it's keeping down the numbers of testosterone-addled yoofs with zero road sense. Hurrah for the Darwin theory in action...

Seymour, is anyone allowed to blow off steam on here without you calling them an ill-educated neanderthal anymore?
This is a forum for discussion, someone has objected to the delays caused by caravans, other caravan users have defended their pastime and right to travel and holiday as they wish.
Of course it doesn't 'really' hurt, however, having lived around Coltishall and having had to suffer the continuous delays on the roads caused by those exercising their rights to holiday as they wish, I can fully understand the anger a lot of people feel at this form of road usage.
It's not so much the fact that they exist that causes the problem, more the absolute disregard 'some' caravanners have for the delays they cause. I have been stuck in these tailbacks and watched as numerous opportunities for the person causing the delay to pull over and relieve the congestion they have caused have been ignored.
This is what really grates most individuals I believe. A slower moving vehicle, enjoying their leisurely drive has ample time to pull over for a minute or 2, and allow others who may be working, or have similarly long drives ahead of them, often with small children to continue unimpeded.
I believe the highway code suggests that such drivers are advised to keep the delay they cause to other road users to the minimum, unfortunately, especially during the summer, this can sometimes seem to be ignored. A simple gesture such as acknowledgement and action to reduce the delay can go a long way to reduce any animosity, and increase goodwill.

I'm surprised this hasn't been done and feel free to delete if it has.

I hate getting stuck behind caravans, but do I speak for everyone? There must be someone who likes pulling an articulated shed behind them.

So come, on slag them, defend them, tell us your views.

Should caravans be limited to certain hours? Is it just caravans who annoy other drivers or other trailers? Should we have to take an extra test in order to drive what is in effect, an articulated vehicle?

Bye the way, I'm talking about CARAVANS, not tractors, lorries or other USEFUL vehicles

Yeah I hate getting stuck behind Caravans, Tractors when I'm in a rush or I'm late for work. But as a owner of one who has never taken it out yet "no towbar" I don't really have a problem with them.

But now if you pass your driving test before 1997 you don't legally need to take a test but after you do.
I only know this as I had to do a trailer test to tow the pump up hyd trollies around camp.

1 Nobody in his/her right mind would take a caravan out on the road in spring without it having been properly serviced (Gas, Electric, brakes, water, etc).

2 Bearing in mind the increased cost of running a towing vehicle, the caravan does not warrant a separate tax.

3 Newer drivers have to take a test to prove competence in towing. Many of us older types go and do the test anyway, just to learn how NOT to make a mistake.

4 Yes, it can be a bit of a drag behind some huge, slow beast, but what's the CD in the car for ?

5 The reason for getting out is that it is easier and cheaper to enjoy somewhere 'outside' the home confines. Modern sites are often in interesting or picturesque places. Several friends regularly go to France or Germany for a decent trip.

I don't; but then, I have a motor-caravan.
