Career break

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Ive been looking at a short term job opportunity which could prove very lucrative...ive seen something on the RAF website mentioning there are limited opportunities for a career break for up to 3 years, but theres no mention if its allowed for things like extra jobs etc..

In my very limited experience of the career break concept, I seem to recall that to qualify there needs to be some benifit to the service. Examples that I am aware of are those individuals that have been granted breaks to compete in sports at an exceptional level (Rugby, Athletics, winter sports, land speed records as examples); the benifit to the service being the publicity the service recieves. I am also aware of those that have managed to take career breaks to work for charaties (overseas expeds etc non military in nature) and others who have negotiated a break for some educational need. Unfortunately I haven't heard of anyone being granted a career break to take another short term job. It may have happened but I can't see it passing the good old "service test".

The only person I know who has succesfully taken a career break of a year was commissioned, unfortunately, beyond that I don't know of any further criteria.

You used to ask your JO in a Gen App not sure now, this was pre JPA. It is up to his discretion. I knew of someone who asked to for it, but it was turned down.

Have read a little about this, cant remember where. What did stick out was that you have to leave public accommodation during your the break.

i read a bit about this a few months ago coz a gal i know took one you apply thru gen app, if its granted they were giving a date of commencement which is just a disharge date the raf wash their hands of you, you move out sfa/sla and become a civvy, if you decide to come back in if its within a year you do a couples weeks refresh and posted like you were at the end of trade, (providing you give the raf a written low down of what youve been upto since you were out) any longer than a year and it may be all of halton again not sure about trade training the gal i knew did two weeks at halton then got posted, but dont take this as gospel speak to chf shiney at you unit

Knew a guy in Cyprus who took a three yr break when his wife was posted to Cyprus, there was no co- location and they had kids so as not to lose him he took three yrs out and then went back you have to add that three yrs to your service so do 25 instead of 22 but it is possible. Another person I knew was offered 12 months off to do the 'round the world' thing to get it out of her system and then come back in. It is very dependent on how expendable you are and how strapped for manning your trade is

there is a guy i know doing a uni course and the last year is a year long on the job thing he was going for a sabbatical butdunno if he got it

Just before I came back down south a SAC of mine applied and successfully got a career break of 2-3 years as her husband is going to the states on an exchange tour. It has to be agreed at the section management level though.

Career Break

Career Break

If you want the full gen, look in JSP 760, its all in there......

Gordon Bennet a career break, what's the RAF coming to; I've been out 10 years, did 24 years service & in all that time I NEVER heard of anybody having a career break!
If your unit/section can afford to let you go for a number of years maybe you're really not required.
Isn't there also the commitment you made to the RAF when you joined for X number of years, if you want to do a different job, leave, PVR & get out & get on with it!
Have you also not noticed that there's a war on or are you maybe in a trade that doesn't take part, or have you no sense of DUTY
UNBELEIVEABLE

no disrespect lone ranger the raf has changed a whole lot in the 8 and a bit years i've been in, People today still have a sense of loyalty, and pride but todays RAF isn't a really great place to work in, I think people just want to see what the outside is like without having to finish their careers, A career break is just that a short break ina career, When the persons return to the RAF after a period on the outside they carry on with the engagement they are on, no stigma in this and i think its a good idea as it may re kindle that love of the service once they realise its not as green on the other side of the camp fence

Bollards!
You just want time off to try something new but with the added safety net of being able to go back to the RAF if it doesn't work out or isn't to your liking,
If it's so bad working in the RAF then why stay in, could it be job security & a pension after 22 yrs. Don't you think we all at some time got racked off with the job you either get posted, suck it up until it get's better or vote with your feet & get out!
You can't all take career breaks or there would be nobody left to launch the jets!

I don't want any time off i was just merely putting across what i know about the subject in question as i have came across two people in my career who have made use of this clause. Rest assured when i leave the RAF i won't be doing anything Air Force related let alone come back for a second go. I love my job regardless of al the crap but when its time to hang up my peak cap and shiny shoes i won't be back, i wouldn't want to be accused of hanging on to something im not a part of anymore.

and next time you post try reading the whole thread and maybe you'd realise that i'm NOT the one taking the career break, rant over
