As some of you know, I've now done 3 Great North Runs primarily to keep the flab off but also to raise money for a number of charities, all of which I've had a personal connecion with at some point. I wasn't able to do it this year as I deployed to Herrick a couple of weeks before this year's race.

Before I deployed I decided to up the ante and put in for the 2011 London Marathon, however a couple of months into my time out here, I found out that I didn't get in and to be honest I wasn't prepared to put the pressure on myself to raise the thousands of pounds for a guaranteed charity place.

However, as a 'London Reject' I was able to get a guaranteed place in the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon to be held on 22nd May.

Therein lies a dilemma. I've got a guaranteed place so there's no need for me to raise money for charity but I'd like to.

What I'd like to do is raise money for a service charity or one linked to where I am at the moment. I don't want to go down the obvious route though ie 'Help for Heroes'. Fantastic charity that they are, I think they get more than enough support especially out here sometimes at the expense of some smaller causes.

That's my spiel. What are your thoughts or suggestions? :PDT_Xtremez_26:

There is always the good old RAFBF.

My colleagues and I ran this year's GNR for the BF and managed to raise a very tidy four-figure sum. Help For Heroes, etc are good charities but they've gotten very big over the last few years at the detriment of other service charities. So it was a real pleasure to help make a bit of a difference and run for OUR charity and put it back in the zeitgeist.

I was thinking RAFBF, but then I also thought RAFA (especially seeing as I got a £20 Paradigm card off the Stamford Branch for Christmas) as well as RBL. Ideally I'd like to split between the 3 but I'd have to raise a fair amount of sponsorship to make that worthwhile and in the current economic climate, that isn't a given.

I was also looking at BFBS's Big Salute.

Choices eh?

Thanks for you r help so far :PDT_Xtremez_30:

A very good idea WGAF. I'm sure E-Goat staff can stretch the coffers for a Goat T-shirt for you to run in. Veterans Aid is a very small and very worthwhile charity, where EVERY penny goes to where it can be used best...... have a think about it mate.

Definitely food for thought there. I'll have a good think about it over the next three weeks before my end of tour.

Thanks again and keep 'em coming :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I know that it's been a while but once I saw the charities to be supported by BFBS' 2011/12 Big Salute campaign it was a no brainer.

So with that, I've been in touch with BFBS and I'll now be doing this year's Edinburgh Marathon for The Big Salute.

Those of you that have me as a friend on Facebook will know that I've been logging my training on there. It's not going too bad and I think I'm on track for 3h 45 although the 20 miles I did on Saturday nearly killed me :PDT_Xtremez_34: (Must take more fluids:PDT_Xtremez_42:)

If you would like to sponsor me my page is up and running at http://www.justgiving.com/deansbigsalute

Thank you :PDT_Xtremez_26:

*Mods, could you possibly alter the title to something more appropriate. Thanks :PDT_Xtremez_26:

I'll be honest fella, I work very closely with the RAF BF and the work they do for RAF personnel is absolutely incredible. The thing is, since H4H came along, the RAF BF is now almost a second choice charity. I would recommend the RAF BF every time.

Hats off to you for all your successful charity work. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

Just started you off mate....all the best and keep up the good work !

Crack on.................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Sorry TCC, should've replied to you earlier.

Thanks for your kind comments.

I've no doubt that the RAFBF and I already contribute to them regularly. To be honest though, when I saw this years Big Salute charities, there were no second thoughts. Especially seeing as they include the current E-Goat charity (Veterans Aid) as well as 2 previous (St Dunstans and Combat Stress).

RAFBF is definitely in the frame for any future runs (all to keep the flab off you know, MRMasher and Oberon305 will both confirm how chunky I used to be for a dwidget)

22 miles this morning. Edinburgh marathon 3 weeks today!! Running for 5 forces charities including the current and previous E-Goat charities.

Thanks to those goaters who have sponsored me so far :PDT_Xtremez_30:

My radio appearance on BFBS' Lynne Duffus Breakfast Show went ok on Tuesday btw. I think it's still on their online 'listen again' feature.

Thank you :PDT_Xtremez_26:

This morning's run will be on Twitter later.

22 Miles Done!! One thing I have to say is...OUCH!! My feet are in bits. Got there in the end though. :S

Many thanks to Duffman btw Brilliant!!! :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Well 4 days to go!! I'm starting to get a little nervous now thinking that maybe 3h 45m might be a bit ambitious. As long as I finish it I'll be happy but sub 4h would be great!

Big thanks to those of you who have sponsored me already. It really is appreciated. Especially seeing as The Big Salute is raising funds for E-Goat's current charity as well as 2 previous ones.

If you would like to sponsor me then please visit

Thanks again :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I can confirm that he was a bit on the chunky side.......but so was/am I!!!

C'mon folks, give him a fiver! :PDT_Xtremez_32:
