Is it still awarded in the 21st century? What do you have to achieve to get it?

As far as I was aware, it was awarded to Rocks who have completed the sniper course.

Dont know whether the rest of us are eligable for it though.

I got mine at Lossie in '74. At the time, we got bussed over to Kinloss to go on the range as Lossie's was being cleaned out. We could go Weds afternoon instead of doing sport.

The standard couldn't have been very high if I got it...................!:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Got mine back in '68 (that's 1968 not 1868 Tb) when I was in the ATC and yes it was on the 303, now there was a real rifle for you, you actually hit what you were aiming at. Unlike the SLR where, due to its weight, if you did not pull the trigger within 2 seconds of aiming it, you nearly ended up shooting your toes off!

.303 gave you a good shoulder work out...... when I shot it in K.D. I gripped it so hard into my shoulder what the range sgt said worked out. About the tighter you hold it the less it hurts. My only glory I had on the range was the fact I could always be the first one with an empty mag, regardless of .303, Bren or SLR. I killed a lot of sand.....!!!!!

Fcuk me Captain that's how I got mine too, at RAF Newton and it was 68 too:PDT_Xtremez_30:

At Swinderby it used to be something like 38 out of 40 in the inner grouping, or in the middle of the target (?) - Didn't really affect me !

Got mine at Swinditz circa 1979, just a nice grouping with an SLR from 25 yards not to hard, quite a few got the badge though it never seemed to have served a purpose. No extra dosh or exemption from anything. TB snr tried for his in the 1950's but didn't get the award. Seems things were a bit harder back then. More Bisleyesque long range 800/400yds ?? with a 303 and a clip of 5 fire at target sprint forward 50yds mag off, mag on fire 5 more sprint forward etc etc. Makes sense to give it to qualified snipers and such like but maybe it's become one of those things that has no real purpose today.

I'm pretty sure all you have to do to qualify is achieve a certain score in the APWT. (Cooheed or 3WT correct me if I'm wrong).

The big reason you don't see it anymore is the fact few in the RAF shoot over 25m (apart from the Regiment).

Plenty of Army types sport the badge.

Got mine in 78 at Swinditz too. It was the only thing sewn on to my thunderbird jacket when I arrived at my first unit! When I stuck my No1 jacket and my thunderbird in for my LAC badges to be sewn on, the tailor at Valley slapped a set of crossed guns on my best blue also. I was later told that this was against dress regs but I wasn't to remove the badge as it would leave a mark on the sleeve.

So with the demise of the No2 Jacket and it not being allowed on the No1 is it still issued?

Yes, it's worn on CS95.

Not that I was paying any attention you will understand, but I only left 18 months ago and never saw any except on Rocks and Pongos.

Mind you saying that it with the amount of TRF, EAW and countless other boy scout badges that seemed to be mandated to be sewn onto CS95, on an almost daily basis by the grown ups , any wonder I never noticed it????

I got mine at Swinders 83, but on arrival at Locking they told me you had to qualify each year to keep it ... is that right ?

Got mine at Swinderby in 1980 and I was told by the rock Cpl there that it was just for show it didn't mean anything because I wasn't a rock. He said something like for the rocks it was a real qualification but cause I was a guin it was something to show me mum on pass out parade day.

Think you're confusing the Skill at Arms Instructor badge with the marksmans MP. You can still qualify for your marksman badge by completing the PWA at 25/100 metres believe it or not (though representative targets are used at 25) or by completing APWT (CI) or (TS) 90%. But as said, you need to requalify each year and you have nowhere to display your 'prize' anyway unless you are into little display cases in your bog etc...
