Marksman

Marksman

I got mine in 1983, after being thrown off the range for cocking my SLR on a load.
Told to bugger off and not come back. They let me back on and I got a perfect score. Not bad for the SLR which took chunks of your shoulder off everytime you pulled the trigger.

compared with the trusty Lee Enfield the SLR is a girly rifle!

I received mine at RAF Wyton back in 1973 prior to posting to Bruggen in Germany , I believe I also received an
extra payment on my salary as a marksman. Probably accounts for the amount of time I spent at Bruggen on station protection team during exercises which seemed to be never ending, SLR and Bren gun ever at the ready. Even though I was the Squadrons only air communication fitter. Happy days. I still have the badges .

In my 9 years from the mid 70's to the mid 80's I don't reckon I did more than 12 sessions on the 25 metre range with an SLR.

Not 100% sure of this but I think it was 2 mags of 7.62, one with 20 rounds the other with 15 rounds. Let's call it 420 rounds total over 9 years. The Soviets must have been crapping themselves.

Never got my RAF Marksman, even though I shot for the Station while in Germany. I did however qualify as marksman with the M16 during one of our friendly shooting competitions against the local Yanks. I have what looks like an Iron Cross medal thing. We used to "swap" weapons, us using their M16s and them using our SLRs. A lot of them thought the SLR was an elephant gun and preferred their own.
