Having passed my Spec Int last week, I thought I was safe in the knowledge (that I was given months ago at the AFCO) that I had two months to train for this damn beep test that is the only thing causing me problems at the moment.

Well I had a call from my AFCO this morning with the good news that my PRTC is now on 14th December and not at the end of January so I have only two weeks to train and frankly I'm now a little bit panicky.

Any pep talks or tips on how to train for a beep test would be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance. :PDT_Xtremez_21:

Keep practising it!

Am sure many people on here have said its downloadable and then just set up 2 cones and keep doing the actual test till you've aced it!

Good luck!

Just Google "Beep Test" - they have their own website!

Thanks Billy, I have been practicing and I'm not quite there yet, I think I may need to go back to the AFCO and ask for a later date. I don't want to waste everyone's time by turning up know that I can't do it.

Bit defeatest if you don't mind me saying! Surely the motivation that you have a PRTC date should help you?

I know. I am motivated by the fact that the dreaded thing is in only two weeks, but also freaking out that it is in only two weeks and I don't know if I can make the grade in that time.

I don't want to overtrain and end up being even worse or causing myself an injury.

I'm just having a minor panic attack about it, because I was all planned out for two months of training and now I have two weeks. :S

Nothing like a bit of short notice to focus the mind!

2 weeks should be plenty, sometimes having too long to think about things can be a negative!

Put the worries that you may fail to one side and work towards your goal - if you really want it, it will be achievable!

Good luck!

Great news Merrick. What role are you going in for?

Dont worry about bleep test mate, just keep up your long runs to increase your stamina, thats' what the test mainly focuses on :)

good luck and keep cool.

see if i hear anything now :)

Yeh waiting for PRTC dates going in as ICT Tech, which is re-opening for new applicants tomorrow, so hopefully get dates soon as there seems to be service need :)

The other bonus is you will be able to throw Sprouts, Mince Pies and Ale down your neck without the spectre of the test hanging over you by doing it before Christmas.

Try and get some mates to run the Bleep test with you. its much harder when running it on your own. With friends doing it at the same time, you can keep pace with them. Try it!! :PDT_Xtremez_15:

I like the cut of your gib, that is a fine point, well made.

Are you sure you're joining the right Service? :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Interval training is really good for improving aerobic fitness quickly. Google "interval training" or "Fartlek" and you'll find loads of websites which will help. Don't get lulled into doing lots of distance; that will build your stamina certainly but only at a steady state - it's the changes of pace and direction which catch people out with the bleep test.

Also, as others have said, don't underestimate the value of a positive mental attitude, or rather the damage which can be caused by a negative mental attitude. I have a theory that most people who fail the fitness test do so before they even walk into the gym because they have already convinced themselves they will fail.

Good luck!

Don't panic

Don't panic

The best advice i can give you which you may have heard a hundred times before isAs already said try interval training and when your actually doing the test when you feel your about to hit the wall don't hit it smash through it!! It's all in the mind after doing the test myself a hundred and one times i still get nervous having a nervous wee before hand, palms sweating and heart coming out of my chest but it's all in the mind!!!Give it a go you'll be amazed how far you can go in the right frame of mind if you want it that bad you will achieve!!

Tis true about the running it on your own bit...I did it totally on my own at Northwood...The Navy PTI pressed play and told me to go get him when I had reached my level...It was harder because you had no-one to pace off for some reason!

The really unbelievable thing was that I actually ran it rather than just stamping my feet on the gym floor and pausing for a second around the beeps...:PDT_Xtremez_42:

Mate, I'm in the exact same boat... Found out this morning.... so been running like a loon! It was so windy earlier I could barely stand so I just went for a run with the bleep test on... pushing myself a little bit faster at each beep until I got over the required standard.... then walked back to a large hill and sprinted up it, walked back down and repeat... It builds your confidence. Will attempt the bleep test tomorrow when I have some free time.

When was your spec int? Mine was the 23rd/24th November.
