Decent Car for Commuting

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
I have a Renault Megane 1.5D 86BHP, it returns 60+ MPG only £35 road tax and group 4 insurance. You can get 50/55 plate from about 3-3.5K. And it's a nice drive. I have only just changes the Rear dics and pads for £70 and they were original parts from a french specialist. Got a mate in MTMS to help me fit em. Front ones I did last year they only cost me £120 same place. And managed to get a timing belt kit and water pump for £135 and got that fitted by a french specialist garage for £190 inc VAT. Renault wanted £400 just to do the timing belt before VAT.

Get an Alfa!!!! I used to commute daily from Norwich to Marham. Had a 147 JTD 16v, 140 Bhp and returned about 47 Mpg and that was thrashing it along the A47. Dirt cheap second hand, reasonably powerful, stylish....... what more do you need? And don't give me any of that guff about them being unreliable, did over 40,000 miles in mine and only problem was a turbo hose that was fixed under warranty.

They're italian and go just as fast in reverse.....................! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

The seat is everything (not that spanish thing). 2 hours a day is a long time to sit your ass is sagging taupe velour. Look after your back.

Have you looked at the "Somebody Elses"? If you can get away with it, it comes with a driver and a favourable MPG. You don't get a choice of colour but hey it's cheap and easy.:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Do your research

Do your research

hey fella,

as above do a full research before you settle on a particular model.

Lots of the newer diesels are extremely expensive to fix when they go wrong with flywheels, dpf's,egr & intake manfiolds all issues to be aware of with Ford & Vauxhall models.

It all depends on the miles you are doing whether its worth it tbh.

I chose to go for a petrol actually, still get a respectable 40 mpg but it's not going to cost a fortune to fix.

As said by others some of the 'older' dervs make good sense and are bullet proof especially the skoda's.

Should pick up a tidy example for your budget with cash to spare
