Definitions: Refit and Replace

I have a need to educate some others about the differences between refitting and replacing an item of equipment. I remember something like AP 100, AP 101 or similar having a proper list of definitions for all sorts of maintenance terms, including these two.

I could make up my own definitions, but would prefer to use some that come with some MoD/NATO/similar pedigree.

If anyone knows what I am on about, and the definitions are UNCLASSIFIED, would someone look up and copy the definitions for me, please? Thanks.

Cheers, dudes. H

JAP 100A-01 Issue 15 has a list of Definitions and Abreviations just after the index list which states as follows:

NB: The definitions below are for words, or technical vocabulary, specific to Military Air Environment use. Where a word appears in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the definition below is specific only to the associated context and OED definitions should be used in all other usages.

Repair

Description
That part of corrective maintenance in which manual actions are performed on the item (BS 4778). Maintenance operation taken to restore operational functions to equipment (JWP 0-01.1).

Replace

Description
To remove an item and to install an equivalent (AECMA Simplified English).

Cannot find a definition for refit - i believe the OED definition should be used..

Hope that helps

REFIT....... Is the reverse of the removal...As defined by the Haynes manual:PDT_Xtremez_30:
Not true. What if the removed item is $hagged?

Refit

Similar to replace - except you re-use the same component/item.

I thought this was a trick question at first.

Refit = to re-install an item after removal for inspection

Replace = to install a new item after old item was found to be unservicable

maybe...........

and then tell me what a 5A2 is, please! Ta :S

5A2 - A/C Safety and maintenance notes. Used to called safety and servicing notes in days gone by usually a small A5 sized book with lots of interesting stuff in it like jet efflux danger areas, seat pin locations etc. and a glossary of terms.

Definitions

Definitions

Assemble – Fit parts together

Disconnect – Undo or break the connection between

Dismantle – Take apart

Reconnect – Recouple or reattach something previously disconnected from the same item

Refit – Fit the item, which has previously been removed

Replace – Remove the item and fit a new and/or serviceable item

Replenish – Refill or restock to a predetermined level, pressure or quantity

Originally taken from BS4778 and AP101A-01-Lflt 156 these may now be outdated bits of paper but the info still stands as far as I know.

have a look at JAP100A-01 Chap 0.4 if you have acccess for current definitions it still quotes BS4778 and JWP 0-01.1 whatever that is. Hope this helps

:D

Tin basher, AP 100A-01 went years ago, pal.
However, I agree that the definitions should be extant.

JAP 100A-01 has removed the 'Refit' and 'Fit' definitions.

Note: The use of fit to mean 'install' will be phased out as TI [Technical Information] is updated

Assuming of course you were taking an item out and planning on putting the same item in (hence not planning on 'Replacing' the item) the initial component is now removed 'Removed' and then a component (which should be the same one but might not be if you later identified it as unserviceable) is then 'Installed'

:D

...Refit – Fit the item, which has previously been removed...
Whilst this is true, I understood that if you removed an item and then despatched it for bay servicing, then got it back "Serviceable" and proceeded to put it back into the aeroplane, then you replaced it rather than refitted it.

It’s not “mines plane fixed” you dork, it should be “mines Aircraft fixed”. Honestly the dumbo’s that are going on the AMM courses they days are beyond belief. At least you won’t be coming back for the FT training, you will have been booted out before then for being a retard.

RAF Firefighter version

Assemble - Give to a techie

Disconnect - pull until in two pieces

Dismantle - Hit with crash axe

Reconnect - Push together 2 pieces until you have one

Refit - Hit with hammer till it fits back in the hole

Replace - refit will not fit, get new one

Replenish - More tea and ciggies
