I am doing a case study on Atlas and DII for college and would like to hear your answers to the following questions: Now that DII has been in for a while, for most, do you think it is better than what you had before? Why? If you it was your decision would you use Atlas for the next contract period?

Been on it for a few years now and never had any problems that weren't resolved quickly and fully so I expect it'll be changed to a cheaper contract anytime soon.

to be fair the only bad thing about DII is the passwords (and the fact you have to change them every 12 or 18 weeks......WHY???!!!)

Oh and the fact that when i try to log into JPA i have to click the non DII option as when i click the DII option the login fails...

A computer is a computer, so long as it has all the software needed to do stuff expected of me then its fine.

The worst part about it is not enough bandwidth for it to keep up with the task and the way that SPOC Agents leave as soon as they are trained to a decent level! I can go on but I don't want to bore you. DF, if you want more gen, then PM me.

Good: Performance is adequate most of the time, flexibility
Bad: Out of office not working for internet emails, IE6!, exhorbitent costs of adding applications to a DII machine, roaming software profiles do not work (Acrobat Pro will only work for me on one of our scanners).

It is definately worse than what I had before since we were able to procure productivity software at low cost, that would probably cost 5 figures to procure.

From my point of view it is appalling. The passwords system is dumb, it encourages you to write down the random characters generated.
And bandwidth is shocking. Was trying to copy and paste between two documents in word and in one ten minute period spent six of them waiting four the hourglass pointer to clear before i could continue. I know because i timed it.

MOSS is fcuking pump. Some cnut should be shot for that abortion.

Thanks for this guys this is really great stuff. I have a few more days before I need to start writing my assignment so keep it coming. If you don't mind I will use some of your quotes as evidence, obviously because it is e-goat I know none of you so no names, no pack drill.

Some of the DII issues above are actually DII Group enforcing MoD policy or BT being unable to deliver the bandwidth of OOO messages.

So they are not necessary a DII 'failure' but simply the 'tool' delivering policy.

view from the other side

view from the other side

I spent my last few years working for another bit of one of the DII companies so another view.

The password requirements are usually defined by you the customer and yes if you make them too convoluted they will get written down, your choice.

bandwidth you get what pay for/specify!! also if your apps are crap throwing bandwidth at it will not help.
Performance problems need to be properly investigated. This was my particular area of expertise, proving the network was not faulty which evolved into proving the applications were or you are abusing it i.e copying large amounts of data from remote sites.

IE6 again your choice, they would prefer you had the latest MS offering.

Costs for most additions are in the agreed contract.

What I can say about commercial outsourced contracts is most orgs take a couple of contract cycles before they really get a grip of the suppliers. I suspect that is more difficult for the RAF as the winged gods never hang around long enough to get a good understanding of contract management.

Put in a system to try and enable a shared working ethos, only to plan it out poorly and end up with people hoarding documents because they can't find where the hell they are supposed to put them...

Then there's the records management tool whenever they decide to roll that out.

IE6 should not be used at all. In fact, a lot of sites no longer support IE6! Makes doing anything on the internet painful. Why outlook can't look in my contacts list before going to trawl the defence intranet is beyond me, as is the convoluted manner in which I have to send from a personal account... Means that 99% of my emails come from a role account then.

IGS/EGS is now slower than a day at Bastion. Timeouts/failed to load etc. My tinternet dongle on 1 bar of 3G is quicker..

Fine, but they affect the DII experience for users and that's what I see and what I'm commenting on. Whats going on behind the scenes is irrelevant to me when 60% of the time I am trying to work is wasted due to lag in the system.

I agree that all we see as end users is a DII problem, I was trying to give the OP a view from both the user side and the provider plus chuck in the contract holder being ISS DII Group.

I'm pretty sure the system just cant handle external OOO, even if you prefix with the release phrase.

I don't use it alot, just for JPA and check my emails once a week. It's fine for that and is pretty quick, much better than marnet (marginally faster than a snail) so far it's pretty good for me.

I agree with the Moss Sentiment- pants!

I was given a DII Laptop and after three months of frustration - and never getting on line with it I gave it back- it was then given to a colleague- who has also failed to get it to work despite hours on the phone to the SPOC- an expensive door stop really!

As for the costs associated with printer consumables- the mind boggles- how we can have such leaverage in purchasing and still pay so much- barmy.

Should have a proper contracts branch in the Military (pay them like dentists etc) that way we might have been given the correct tool for the job. DII is ******* pants. ::P:
