England 2018 World Cup Bid

We never stood a chance not with Blatter in charge and members such as Platini.

To be honest the major downside is we have to qualify now.

So we lost because of, That Sunday Times article, That Panorama program, the fact that loads of brummies knocked lumps out of each other last night. Russia won by bribery and corruption, by being mafia run, by virtue of never holding one before. The conspiracy crowd will have a field day, dig in chaps, theorise to your hearts content, simply it's not us.

For me its not about conspiracy theories as such TB, its about honesty. As I said before, Blatter wants his legacy to be that he extended the game of football into new territories and brought the game to new markets. Fine, thats an honourable intention and for that nobody can really criticise the choice of Russia for the 2018 tournament. Qatar is a different kettle of fish as its going to be an inferno out there when the tournament is played.
BUT, when it becomes clear right at the end that these are the criteria they are looking for in awarding the tournament to a bidding nation then that IMHO is unacceptable, especially when they tie up two successive tournaments using the same criteria in one go. All of the established nations, and those bidding for a second tournament had, when the voting started, been wasting their time for the past couple of years. If they wanted to award the tournament to an emerging nation or developing footballing marketplace then they should only have accepted bids from such nations, and told everyone else not to bother.
Still, thats FIFA for you.

How many millions has this cost? How many dinners? How many presents? The deal was long done, even to the point that Putin had a lie in.

We did the best grovelling job of a presentation.

Blatter must have been laughing his cokc off during it

For me, it is about corruption. Look at it like this: If he really wanted to extend the game as JL said, he could have told all the established countries not to bother. However, if he does that he and his erstwhile companions in crime (for a crime it is), will be going home with some pretty light goody bags today............but invite everyone to the party and everyone gets to "contribute", as it were.

And he can do this, for there are no police to police the police.

I think that the Panorama programme and other media barbs pointed at FIFA are a convenient excuse for our failure to win with our bid. Quite simply FIFA (and the IOC) are run by some of the most arrogant egotistical people on the planet. Sepp Blatter and his cronies have had the British Prime Minister, our future King, plus the most famous current footballer England has all out there almost in supplication before them, and they absolutely love it! to have their ego's massaged in such a manner by such people the FIFA execs must have been creaming themselves. And the feeling they must have had when not only did only one of them (apart from Englands committee member Geoff Thompson) vote for us to ensure we lost at the first stage. The level of humiliation, the smack in the face to David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham, was carefully calculated and without doubt delivered with relish I can imagine them saying Beckham, Cameron, Prince William, we showed them our power and sent them packing, that will teach them and put them in their place!!!!:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Too few people wielding too much power - 22 votes from Executive Committee and President which makes is relatively easy to apply corruption/bribes.

If each of the 208 FIFA member associations had a vote then it would make it too difficult/impractical to carry out any underhand deals etc.

It's a fairly simple solution, but one which Mr Blatter, and his fellow power-brokers, will resist at all costs.

Would it? I know it is a very loose comparison but look at the voting in the eurovision Song contests - that is not about best song is it.

It was the same in 1974, 1978 and 1994 when England never qualified!

That would have required them to be up front and honest with the bidding process from the outset. Not a FIFA trait these days

True. Interesting though that Andy Anson has said more or less exactly the same thing today, i.e. don't bother bidding again until you can be sure it has a chance of succeeding.

Also, if in the unlikely event they have to move the tournement. Due to not enough facilities or no security etc, then we should tell them to ram it. England as Blatter put could hold the world cup tommorrow, lets not give the cnut the option.

Or better still, lead him down the garden path and tell him to shove it just before its due to start.

£2.1M wasted when the country is being slashed to the bone. Fecking priceless! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

You`re joking. Its about the biggest money spinner there is. It`d bring in literally billions if the right teams qualified, and lets face it,with FIFA taking a cut, the right teams would qualify.
