Lets face it guys in a couple of years with redundancies and JPA making us lose personnel we will be known as the RCAF (Royal Civilian Air Force)
That's only if the pongos don't get first dibs!

They are already calling us the 100 year experiment.

History repeating, I hope not!

History repeating, I hope not!

The best lessons are learnt from history, me I prefered geography!

As I seem to recall the last time we (RAF) were formed to fight expeditionary warfare was the late 1930's, supposedly then we possesed the best fighters we could get (Hurricane's) and we were there to halt zee german advances (professional well motivated army and airforce) alongside our gloriously historic and smelly bretheren, the army! As we know Dunkirk and the defeat of the RAF in france marked a low point for the British.

I can draw a few parrallels with 1939 and The current RAF and the armed forces as we stand now;

1. Underfunded
2. Ill equipped throughout
3. Overstreched
4. Undermanned
5. Low morale

If we ever fight against an organised motivated enemy I feel the UK forces and the RAF could be overwhelmed, where will be the next Dunkirk? Will we get our butts kicked. I fear the answer could be yes.

I'm sorry for the gloomy outlook and it's not quite hurrah flag waving stuff but let's be serious, if it happens our political overloards will slither out of the blame and maybe a few jobs will be lost. We will undoubtebly be blamed wholesale and then be left to mourn our dead and support any captured while being reorganised again.

I know why!

I know why!

I think I know why we are being arranged into these wing thingys. After all the redundancies (99% tradesmaen) there is a glutof officers with heehaw to do. DA DA these wings come along, we of course need our betters to lead said wings, Rodney keeps his job and we are no better off than we started. Maybe I am just a bad man...........

The concept of AEWs is fine for fast jet or helicopter units, when the jets or cabs are all away, there is little need for support at home base, but who will keep the 'hubs' going when the transport chaps are all deployed with the 38th AEW?

What a load of arse!!!!

Would have been nice to be told beforehand though wouldn't it?
We only found out down the Falklands because we had a email go aroung telling us that the Falkland Island Air Wing (encompassing 78sqn, 1312 flt, 1435 flt etc) new postal address was now 905 EAW.
One of the lads found found some info on an obscure part of the intranet that detailed all of the changes.
What else are the powers that be doing that they aren't telling us?

RAF Today

RAF Today

Hey You Guys,
Seems like the Labour partyare doing a pretty good job of wrecking the good old RAF these days, fings aint wot they used to be in my day!

All these closures and cut backs in defence spending, you will be back to the RFC days. Arming Chipmunks and Tiger Moths with Sidewinders, or will it be issuing a Heckler & Koch to the man in the back seat?

Seriously though, to disband two fighter sqdns at Leuchars and leave 8 A/C to defendthe UK takes some beating. I dont think the CAS is too young to remember in Lightning days, we had to put 2 Sqdns on QRA to meet the Russian threat once the ice melted on the Kola peninsula; and the Bears and Badgers came swarming south to test our defences.
The Russian threat is not over, they could soon ressurect their forces, and be a serious threat again.
Phantomphixer Retired (Cannot sleep at night worrying about the sad state we are in thanks to Paw Broon and his clowns!)

Why would the russians attack? All they have to do is switch off the gas and oil and we're back to a third world nation!

Or - in 76' when there were 3 Sqns of Tombs on "Q" for a rather large Bear trail - had us a little worried for a couple of days... (and weren't squadrons a little larger in those days as well???)

Was that '76?...I thought it was '79. I was duty POL at Leuchars that week and we nearly ran out of Avtur because of the high sortie rate plus the umpteen tankers that suddenly appeared from Northwest Norfolk. MoD had to raid the PSD at Forfar and "commandeer" fuel destined for Edinburgh and Glasgow airports otherwise the "Sorry , no fuel" signs would have went up.

theres QRA at Coningsby (3(F) and 11) and the two squadrons being stood down at leuchars are being remustered as typhoon squadrons, so i guess there will be another QRA there soon.

I'm pretty sure that the scottish bases (one of at least) is already providing QRA North whilst the shiny aircraft in Lincolnshire are QRA South. During the training phase between Tornado and Typhoon the southern base will probably be covering both. On a more topical note, a recent high ranking visitor (above 1*) said that in his opinion the whole EAW concept was a bag of nails and wasn't working. Mind you he also said that the next two years was going to be very painful for the RAF so it wasn't all bad news. We have something to look forward to:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Nah! they'll reform 25 and do it all from Leeming again :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Nowt like throwing cash around:PDT_Xtremez_35:

I left in '77... They raided the entire stock of Sidewinders from the MU's...

Yep. Definitely a case of don't hold your breath. The Tornado chaps will have to be 'converted' to fly Typhoon first which is why I think the Lincolnshire base will be covering the North if they do start disbanding squadrons up there early.
