All allegedly of course (for now)
"An Army doctor fraudulently booked thousands of pounds worth of flights to visit his family, a court heard today. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Baird-Clarke was moved from his job in Scotland to a new role in England assisting new recruits, but was unhappy with the posting. A court martial heard that even after he was told he could not claim an allowance for the flights, he continued to book the travel..........The prosecutor said Lt Col Baird-Clarke, 'just wanted to fly home at public expense so came up with a ploy to achieve his aim.'"

As a Lt Col surely his salary would be sufficient to pay for the odd internal UK flights extra to his permitted travel order allowance and he isn't the first amongst us to get a unwanted cr@p posting. Perhaps there's more to this than meets the eye, has he not heeded "advice" given quietly beforehand, is he arrogant, unpopular or just a self entitled c0ck who is for now obviously innocent of all charges.

Off topic but look here, there’s been a few, being Civilian jail nobody really serves the sentence they’re given.

Yes, you got me on that. I should have researched before throwing down the gauntlet.

Whoever did have the balls should be the next CDS, instead of these spineless yes men & women that frequent the MOD's corridors.

It depends on what his motivation was for highlighting the issue, was it jealousy, as said by Mrs Welch, who’s character has been tarnished by her own behaviour, or was it a genuine belief in doing the right thing?

Was she equally guilty, no, only on the basis that she couldn’t have been expected to understand or follow the rules, was she culpable, yes as seen in her actions once there crime were reported.

Are these couple of recent cases an indication of a worsening moral compass or a change in culture where truth to power has finally become acceptable.

There have always been folk in public life who want to extract as much as they can from the public purse. I recall a time when I was DAO/Cashier for a large exercise in Vegas. Everybody was given $66 a day and if they couldnt account for it at the end of the week, they had to pay back the difference. The "alleged" lengths that some folk would go to to keep hold of that $66 were extreme to say the least - certifying lost receipts for $50 meals, sweeping the BX for discarded receipts of greater value than their own, and in some cases, offering Americans a couple of bucks to buy their much larger receipt!

In all these cases, I knew what was going on but when I approached Command Accts for clarification & support, I got told that because they had a receipt and/or certified a lost receipt, there was nothing that could be done as they had complied with the rules in force. At that point I metaphorically shrugged my shoulders and accepted whatever was chucked in at the end of the week, and never took a cent off anyone . I submitted my End of Det report with a damning of the system and how if they'd paid everyone $40 a day, with no questions asked, the net saving over the 8 week det would have been close to £350,000

Thankfully, there was a common sense moment soon afterwards, the ROPE form was binned and the next time I returned it was $45 a day and no forms!

I was on a det and helped the DAO out a few times (we had access to vehicles and places they couldn't go) so got to know them a bit better.

On arrival the DAO briefed everyone that any complaints about the hotel were to come to them and not to bother the hotel staff. So it was a bit of an eye opener when i found out that when the DAO made those complaints, it was direct to the hotel manager and the DAO was accepting fruit baskets, bottles of wine, meals etc on behalf of the lads/lasses who had the legitimate complaint.

Also worked with another DAO on Ex who was done for fraud. I had worked with them on a number of Ex's, again, a bit of a shock as they helped sort funding etc for me and my team and genuinely wanted to help the dets. But then effectively threw away their careers for not significant sums of money.

Apologies for the necro post but there's more, seemingly 11 more, with their fingers in the public purse via the boarding school fiddle. Of course for now it's all allegedly.

The more the merrier that get caught, sent down and lose their pensions the better.
