I know it was gash to not bleed the brakes and keep everything closed, but I don't have the kit for it and have never done it before.
So thought if I don't disturb the system then it shouldn't need doing.
I did this the last time I changed the pads and it was fine.
You should always open the reservoir cap when pushing the piston back. It makes it easier to push. I always dip some kitchen roll in the top to soak out the excess fluid.
When does the light illuminate? All the time or just when braking?
I take it you've checked the brake fluid level? Discover any seeps from the pipes/hoses? Might be worth checking the pad sensor plugs. Unplug them, squirt them with wd40 and reconnect.
If it has only happened in the last few days it may well be ice (as suggested) in the connectors. Anything that you did when changing your pads and discs would likely have manifested sooner.
Whenever I have done pads/discs I re-establish the fluid level, bleed the brakes and recheck the fluid level. I do it when it's all accessible. Gives me peace of mind to know that the brakes have effectively had a full service!
