Frozen Windscreen Wash Pipes

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
On me old Mini we ran a length of pipe ( the kind you get from a per shop for your fish tank ) from the washer bottle , around the engine and then to the washers in the bonnet - when the car warmed up , it warmed the water up and sprayed warm water onto the window. It dint help the initial freezing , but after 5 - 10 mins it got rid of the problem.

This is a modification that I've seen on many classic cars, but specifically, the pipes are routed around the coolant pipes where they get hotter first. It works even better if you replace a short section of the coolant pipe and washer pipe with copper pipes (big and small obviously) and wrap the small one around the big one in a spiral.

Feck that! Drink the vodka then breath on the windscreen. :PDT_Xtremez_42:

You don't need that much, (few good tots worth!) just dilute it with normal screen wash and H20 but don't forget to pump it through the pipes or your efforts are in vain!

I bought a quarter bottle of Grants? I'll take the advice of HS and just put a wee bit in. Ta muchly :)

I thought this was a joke. Seriously most lads put about quarter bottle in back in the 70s in Germany but that was very much cheaper than winter screen wash which is much more effective these days. Halfords do a very good one.

Very true mate, I use mine to clear the windscreen when I run out of de-icer. Just don't do it as you drive...... took a few bloody years off me that did ! :PDT_Xtremez_42:

Maybe, but doesn't make you feel as good as buying the cheap vodka from the NAAFI (DM5 a litre, early 80s), pouring half in the windscreen wash bottle and the other half (mit orangensaft) down your neck. Just make sure you did it in that order, otherwise half a litre of vodka could easily spill, then you're stuffed! Can't see out of the windscreen, and too pi$$ed to drive anyway!

Half a litre now is it? You might be right, the 'few tots' earlier advised ensured ... frozen pipes, and 40 mins for engine heat to defrost em. I'm gonna empty the tank and put in a full bottle then top up with concentrate. If that dont work, I surrender.

Cooheed, I did say a few GOOD tots, for me that's about quarter of a bottle mixed with the normal screenwash. I presume you made sure it was sent through the pipes too? Still works in Germany though not suffering from the temperatures in UK at the moment!

Just neck the bottle and go drive. You won't give a toss whether you can see or not.

I poured a 1/2 litre of white vinegar into my washer bottle. Apparently vinegar is good to descale and I know it is brilliant for cleaning glass.

So far, so good: all four jets have cleared out and work well.

Had a few problems waiting for the jets to defrost from start-up but seem to do it quicker than before.

Only problem is we get whiffs of warm vinegar wafting into the car. For some reason we then want to stop at a chippy.....!

Easier to say a quarter bottle if you ask me.. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

So it's voddie, vinegar and the gap left screenwash. Now what is that going to do to the paintwork if anything?

Most glass cleaners contain large concentrations of vinegar, I can't see it affecting your paintwork too much TBH.

Heard on BBC news that diesel can start to freeze at -15 degrees. Don't know what you'd do to stop that freezing!!

Fuel additives are put in at the refinery to help prevent this. Winter diesel is a different mix to the summer stuff.

I used to put one gall petrol in the tank then top up with diesel.
