Hey All!

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
no i totally understand about not throwing my weight around etc, but i just don't see why you'd auto get promoted to a sarge?

so even after basic training and stuff you can still be denied a place? or is that only if your an idiot?

You have to pass Basic Training, then NCAITC, then JATCC. Its not easy....

It's not being an idiot at all...Each course along the way is a tough course in its own way....Not everyone meets the grade and passes.

agh cool, i understand abit more now, thanks for that!

so basically even after JATCC theres the potential not to pass out and finish your training, do you have to redo the whole JATCC training course again to try pass 2nd time or what happens then?

thanks for your help upto now!

You get one shot at JATCC. If you are lucky, you may get recoursed or sent back to join a later course if they think you are worth it.

If you pass JATCC and fail to validate at your unit.... Well thats a different matter completely. Not worth worrying about to be honest.

oh hell! no pressure then! I've got everything together just need to work on the fitness, I'm crap at push ups and never done a bleep test so gunna struggle on that until I've trained a lot!

If you can't take pressure, don't even think about it! But it's not a job for adrenalin junkies. You need to remain calm and in control of the situation, other people's lives depend on that. You also need to show initiative. As for personality testing, you ought to be able to find it for yourself in the RAF recruiting website, try googling it.

I'd be interested to know what FOMz ('flight operations manager') thinks but I'm wondering whether in your case it might not be better for you to spend two or three years as a flight operations assistant first (that's what I did but the job had a different title then) before applying for ATC/ATCO training. You would not lose out in the long run by doing this and you seem a bit skittish at present.

And train a lot you must. NCAITC is physically demanding and designed to take you out of your comfort bubble then out of your uncomfortable bubble into the 'ouch' area. The idea, aside from giving you minimal preparation to be a SNCO, is to load you up with mental challenges, reduce your chances to sleep, run you hard and regular, set you high standards to maintain and push you at all times...with all that going on they then look at you to see how you cope. If you sulk, lose it or generally have a melt down you aren't suited to this line of work...if you shrug your shoulders, smile and say something productive like 'I've heard sleep is overrated...let's up our game' then they'll find you acceptable.

You need to arrive there fit...the fizz on the course starts at a high level and is essentially designed to give them the reassurance that if you hack it you're fit enough to go out on the exercises.

thanks a lot to both of you and everyone else who has commented on this post.

I have decided to get the ball rolling and apply to join as a regular ATC. Im going to be making contact with the RAF and arranging a meeting at my AFCO, at least this way i can chat to them and also get as much info as possible.

as regarding to fitness i wouldn't say I'm 100% unfit, i just don't spend hours in the gym like most guys my age. However if it meant me being able to join the RAF i will train and train hard for my position.

thankyou to all thats given up their time to reply and give me VERY good advice, for that i can't thank you enough, heres to my journey into the RAF! :)

So yesterday i attended my local AFCO and got the ball rolling on becoming an SNCO ATC.

I'm going to start fitness training today and work my way up to meeting and surpassing all the targets set for the initial stages. this is going to be the hardest thing for me as i know I've got a lot of work to do to get upto the required levels but I'm determined to do it!

thanks everyone for your help upto now, and ill keep this thread updated with my progress if anyone is interested

thanks again :)

Good man, get cracking - and we always love follow up's on here; succesful or otherwise. It's the peeling yourself off the deck that really matters.

ATC wise: Unfortunately you can no longer do JATCC after being an FOA without applying DE through the AFCO they have closed what they called "Legacy" applications from currently serving assistants. This is stopping the majority of assistants from applying for SNCO-ATC because if they don't pass NCA/JATCC then unfortunately they may find themselves out of the RAF.

However it could well be worth a couple of years as an assistant before OP applies for commission which these days is the easier way into Air Traffic.

Lowndsy good luck with your application. Get practicing your 1.5 mile run, bleep test, push ups and situps. Once you reach a good standard (light blue minimum) get a lot of weight on your back and get up the hills. The more you do now the easier you will find the Phys on NCAITC, the easier you find the phys the more capacity you have for the leadership tasks.
