Anyone been on holiday to the states? I'd love to go. Not too bothered where. Missus wants to go to San Francisco, but I've just checked the flight details, it's almost as long as going to the Falklands!! Maybe she'll settle for New York?

Anyone been to San Francisco? Any recommendations - hotels, sights to see ( I know about the bridge!), restaurants etc?

I'll be blagging forces discount everywhere I can :)

Thanks for any replies.

You'd do far worse than Boston - its only 7 hrs flying time, its a great city to explore, and there are some top notch places to eat and drink. Only suggestion is go in the summer months - first time I went out there it was December and they had just had 8 feet of snow....

Don't go to San Francisco - nice city but full of the lady boys...

I live in NY state so am a tad biased towards the east coast. NYC has all the glitz you see on the T.V. but like most big cities there is a much seedier side to it. However if you don't mind driving, upstate New York is very nice, quiet and beautiful scenery, if you want the beaches then the New Jersey coastline is nice as well. The whole of New England isn't that much of a drive. Be warned though that NY gets very humid around the end of the summer, and it is even worse in NYC. San Francisco also has a state park where you can see the giant redwood trees, they are supposed to be quite spectacular. I like it out west, the Grand Canyon is outstanding, getting up before sunrise and watch the sun pick out different rock formations is a photographers dream. I know that NY Tourism has its own website and probably each state does too. Perhaps a little Googling could help you make your decision. You will probably find that gas, booze and food are a lot cheaper over here.

I'm currently in Maryland near Baltimore, tis quite nice and handy as a central point. Can go south to Washington & Virginia or North for Philly & New York. So for the sake of a couple of hours drive (roads are alright) you can get a fair bit of touring done.

My Missus is from PA and we end up there or therabouts for a long while every year, so I go with the East Coast, and especially PA where there is some great scenery, no sales tax on clothing), super micro-breweries, Amish food and some of the best fishing in the US (Clinton still frequents it just for that) . Other than that, yes, maryland is nice as well (great civil war history), and North Carolina - especially the Outer Banks beaches (Kitty Hawk lies in there) are just great in the summer if you want to try and get a condo hired for a week or three. The really good thing is that DC, PA, Maryland and even NJ and its beaches are pretty much half a days drive away from each other....... and, ultimately, the people from the East coast have their head outside their bodies!

Best time to visit ? 2 years ago when life was cheap.

I have to agree with Kryten on this one.. Boston and in general "New England" is an excellent place to visit. Dont go in the winter tho.. they get more snow than we do (odd considering we are roughly 300 miles north of Boston).

The only pain is getting through C&I over the other side of the pond... it takes forever!!

Depends if you have a Nato Travel Order at hand ;)

Don't forget you will need to fill out a visa application for the states. Its called ESTA Electronic system for travel authorization. LINKY

has the visa waiver routine gone by the board nowadays then? y'know, the thing you used to fill in on the kite on the way over there

They are still asking you to complete the Visa Waiver form, or at least they were in January. However I would cover all bases and make sure you have registered on line too.

I did NYC in January and fell in love with the place. Cant wait to go again.

bloody hell.. i remember the time when just flashing your British passport was enough to make Johnny Foreigner bow down and accept you as a member of the master race as soon as he read "Her Brittanic Majesty......" an Englishmans word was his bond etc etc now you have to bow and scrape to get into what was, at one time, one of our own colonies.

I shall never go there again

Downsizer is right you do need the ESTA for the Visa Waiver program. The link I posted earlier is what you need to fill out and takes a whole 5 min, all you need is your passport number and where you are staying.
The NATO travel order may help smooth out going through immigration.

And it's all thanks to terry taliban and their mates:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Did a road trip a few months ago, worked out around 1200 miles and 9 Hotel/Motels all within the State of Georgia. We spent most of the trip off the beaten track using mainly B roads, M1 to us, making the most of what the real America had to offer. Driving is easy and there is no lane discipline so any lane will do on the Interstate. Hotel/Motels vary in price as we found out but standards are very good and we could have left our towels at home. You will need to book your arrival Hotel as this will be asked for by immigration. Shop around for car hire and make sure you check it thoroughly, I am in dispute with THRIFTY for giving me a car with a bald tyre. Overall we had a cracking time as we covered short and long trips to suit our needs. Hope you enjoy your trip....

Take a tour through Arizona.. Its got the lot, from civilisation like Scottsdale and Phoenix, Tuscon, and the wild side like the Canyon, Flagstaff, Momument Valley, Yuma desert and Tombstone...

Yeah, thats an ass, especially in the 70's throwback of DC Dulles. Best hint, arrive on one of those few flights leaving earlier in the day, or better still, book via Dublin on aer-fungus. The whole mess is completed before you leave the british isles and you walk right through.

Most of my travels in the states have taken me to the places where everyone goes...Washington, The Keys, Miami, Vegas etc. Obviously all these places have their own lure but only for a couple of days to get the 'tick' in the box...I like some of the ideas I've seen on here for off the beaten track travel...We've always said that if our numbers came up or we just scored a little cash from somewhere we would take a couple of months out and with the kids hire out a big feck off Winnebago, one with a car towed behind it, and start from Maine and dawdle through the states East to West going where wind and whim takes us...Now that would be sweet...

Just as long as you steer clear of me.....XXX

I'm off to Baltimore on Saturday to see my brother and his new daughter. I will do this because I have to, however I will vacate the godforsaken country that is full of complete tossers as soon as I can. Unbelievable that 110million w*nkers haven't got a word for w*nkners.
