How hard (or easy) is to sack someone from the RAF?

Maybe a little effort from the WO in positive motivation of the individual is required. Is he suffering from poor leadership from those lower down in his chain of command? It's sometimes too easy to let someone flounder when a little support would sort the situation.

Leadership, smeadership. It's a management issue, manage the situation, manage the man and manage the solution. Leadership does not enter into the situation, management does.
 
This is a fairly typical manager behaviour, they put up with the poor behaviour for a long time then when they have finally had enough they raise the issue with HR and want it sorted yesterday, however, they never give you any sort of disciplinary trail yet have a history of okay (sometimes great) annual appraisals.

Then you sit down with the employee and he states that he cannot understand as he's always had good feedback and nobody has ever mentioned this before.

Most people in a job that requires them to drive will get the chop if they get caught and banned due to D&D, it'll normally be a contract clause for drivers, even if not it would normally be a fair dismissal as long a fair process was followed.

I very much doubt they have 'put up with the poor behaviour', in fact I can imagine that he has given his management MANY a good listening too! Many managers (myself included) will try to do the 'unofficial' route in the hope that the miscreant will learn the error of his ways and give him a chance. When that fails, the formal route can escalate quite rapidly.

Since when did we detach leadership from management? With good leadership/management skills the problem can often be nipped in the bud before it requires some form of administrative action.

IMHO, two different attributes but they do cross polinate at times.

You can have an inspirational leader able to drive men forwards, but it'll be his SME's who'll ensure it happens. Conversely, you'll get the guy on the coal face managing things quite fine but when faced with the really big questions, will only look upwards.
 
As yet I've not had to dish out MAA or a fizzer as I've found a "quiet chat" and re-education had the desired effect. Sometimes the threat of follow up does the trick better than just jumping in with both feet. In fact going in gung ho and all guns blazing down the MAA route without proper consideration can backfire, especially when you don't get the sanctions right. Had to get one of the management to reconsider his issued sanctions as it was outside of the boundaries laid down in the JSP for one lad. Correction was made, blushes spared and smiles returned all round. Job done in my eyes, lad knew he messed up, took his punishment without complaint and a little education up the chain took place as well.
