Hope some of you computer experts can help. I need to buy a LapTop and one of my TG3/4 mates has said it needs the following:

Dual Core Processor
WiFi enabled
Onboard Network Card 100/1000
Onboard Modem
DVD recorder

I've got up to £500 to spend, do you know any good deals at the moment. I am visiting UK next week so can go into a proper shop, but I can also get tax-free stuff from websites like Amazon.

Thanks.

For that cash mate, there's loads of deals at the mo and virtually all will be of the spec required. Have a look at the pc world site to give you an idea. That sort of cash will get you quite a rapid dual core job.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

I bought one in a Bank Holiday deal from PC World with all of the above about a month ago.

At £399, its everything youll need, so £500 should get you a cracker.

Folks, many thanks for all the advice. Just been to the PX and bought a Toshiba A205 S4607 Satellite laptop for $1100. Got a bit of local advice from one of the TG3/4 IT geeks out here who advised because of the exchange rate (I put it on UK Credit Card £550 approx) it was great value.

I hear there are lots of Internet security issues with Vista, and it has come pre-loaded. Is there any advice as to what prevention measures/programmes that I should take to prevent virus/spam/spyware etc?

Thanks again.

Haven't had any issues with Vista, though I did add Avast and ZoneAlarm (both free) to my machine. Very good packages and I think most goaters will agree as I think there is a few of us using them.

Mainly internet study/research type stuff whilst in the Falklands, and then it will become the kids when I get back. I need access to the OU website, digital banking, research websites, e-mail etc etc.

From the spec and the reviews I have read you have the machine you need and a a fairly decent price. The only limiting point would be the graphics which I don't think will fully support some of the games out on the market but that isn't a major thing anyway (considering you're getting on a bit games probably won't interest you LOL).

Easy tiger, still a young pup at heart!! Can you play games on the lap top then? Do they do PacMan and Asteroids?

Yes you can get games like PacMan and Asteroids, however because of their(and your) age you would have to get a program called an "Emulator" basically it makes your computer think its 30yrs older than it is so it can play the came. :PDT_Xtremez_28: :PDT_Xtremez_28:

As for the Vista security issue, get a copy of XP for now and install that.

I Wouldnt touch Vista for at least another year especially since my brother in laws Vista laptop has just died a death due to security holes.

Vista is fine, just stay away from dodgey porn sites. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

It is only really some of the new gucci games out there, they will still play but the quality will be a bit dodgy/slow.

If you want the old stuff there is a site world of spectrum (or something like that) where you can play all the old stuff.

Just switched it on at lunchtime - It looks the cat's whiskers. So question - Is Vista safe on the net or not?

I have had no problems with it so far. Having never been a fan of Microsoft's Firewall it actually seemed to do the job. I did install a 2nd firewall but TBH I tend to do that anyway.

Just make sure you have a decent AV package on there. I wouldn't recommend Norton or McAfee as they can eat up resources and slow your machine down. Avast is a very good one and I haven' t had any snags so far (touches head).

Just check out some of the other threads in the Comp Tech forum there are some good recommendations
